Spider-Man on the bases? C'mon!

ESPN.com's Page 2 reports (from the Wall Street Journal) that the MLB signed a deal to use Spider-Man on the bases and pitching rubber this summer.

Does this scare anyone else?

I feel bad for whoever was standing next to Bob Costas when he found out.

Juan Pierre will also be forced to dress in a spiderman suit while on the field to promote the movie, Spiderman 2.

I was going to say Carl Crawford, but same effect.

If anyone should wear advertisements, it should be the cheerleaders. The could have a patch over there...oh wait, baseball doesn't have cheerleaders.

Yup, and all bats should say "goldenpalace.com" on them.

I agree with Page 2. The public outrage over this will kill it before the bases every see any advertising. I'm not that worried.

That sucks. I notice on soccer telecasts, they're putting computer generated ads on the field. It probably won't be long till we see that on baseball and football fields. Mascots will be replaced by movie characters.

That's nuts, but what I like about foreign soccer teams is the advertising usage in good taste. Instead of applying ugly patches to an existing uniform, the uniform is designed to incorporate the sponsor's logo. The logo is in the same team colors of the rest of the uniform and never looks distracting.

They already put computer generated ads on top of the signs in the stadiums.

It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.

I don't understand how this will work. How often do viewers get to see a base full on to be able to see the advertisement?

Eh, I watch a lot of soccer, so its nothing new to me. Advertising is a necessary evil, and if its done tastefully, its not such a big deal. I think putting the ads on the bases is a bit strange, but if that works for them, fine by me.

Something tells me that you will be able to see the bases full on if they have ads.

How? Cameras on the rooftops? The Sony blimp? Radio controlled helicopters?

The only angle we ever see of the bases is from the side, and the bases aren't thick enough to have a logo large enough to see. Seems to me the only time you'll get a close enough shot of the base is on the occasional closeup of a steal of 2B, or maybe a pickoff play at 1B, or a guy trying for a triple. In other words, this advertising can't be very intrusive at all.

They will do anything it takes to get the ad on tv. And I agree it wont be very intrusive. Its not like they are going to replace the bases with inflatable Spiderman dolls.

This sucks. I enjoy going to the ballpark for the nice symmetry of the white lines, the white batter box and the white bases. Its completely ruined.
