Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. I hope the Sox keep up the momentum. Pedro vs Vasquez is tomorrow.

I probably would have turned it down, too. Today's the NFL Draft!

if he was the leadoff hitter
that would just give him 1 more intentional walk per game

Brandon Arroyo gets out of a threatening situation with a strike 'em out / throw 'em double play and a weak groundout from Rodriguez.

Red Sox 1, Yankees 0 after one.

Arroyo settled down and now has 3 strikeouts through two.

Kevin Brown has only given up one hit (a single) but also gave up two walks, two sac flies, two errors, and a hit batsmen.

Sox up 2-0.

Francona does not know how to take out pitchers! Why stick with a tired 5th man instead of going to your stellar bullpen?!?

Arroyo gave up two consecutive singles to start the 7th, and Rodriguez went to third on an error. Instead of taking him out (with no outs) he left him in to face Sheffield, who singled and knocked in a run.

Six good innings by your fifth starter are now completely wasted.

Game tied currently.

Sabean is not clueless about stats, he's just a couple of decades behind on their use. I think they're pretty high on his totem pole, but he clearly doesn't get OBP, so within the overall totem pole, there's a Stat Totem Pole, and on that pole, OBP is near the bottom.

He'll get the occasional hitter with decent OBP, but it's an accident when it happens. J.T. Snow's value the last couple of years is almost entirely in his willingness to take a walk, and Sabean will mention that in passing, but what keeps him returning to the J.T. trough is the gold gloves. Durham has a decent OBP, but what Sabean saw was a veteran second baseman with some power and some speed. Alfonzo was a versatile player who could hit .300 and was a bargain because of injuries that were hopefully in the past. I really don't think OBP entered into the thinking at all for Sabean.

And, of course, he shouldn't get any credit for Barry Bonds, the biggest reason the Giants have been successful in the Sabean Era.

Meanwhile, the list of low-OBP guys that Sabean has picked up is seemingly endless, but in each case, there was something in the guy to get Sabean's attention, often something in the stats. He knows the stats, he just ignores OBP. Benito had hit .300, had hit 30 homers. Marquis had the gold gloves and double-digit HR and SB. Neifi was a gold glove middle infielder capable of hitting .280 with 10 homers ...OK, Sabean maybe doesn't understand Coors. Tucker? Fast guy with a little pop. Every one of these guys can look like a decent pickup if you just ignore their OBP. And that's what Sabean does.

If you look at a player's page at Baseball-Reference.com, you'll note they have a line, "Career High," that shows the best a hitter has done in every category. I think that's what Sabean looks at. So instead of seeing Michael Tucker and thinking "aging guy who hasn't been any good since 2000," he sees .283 BA, .511 SLG, 15 HR, 23 SB. (I'm sure he doesn't look at stuff like OPS+ that exposes Tucker's limitations ...that probably gives Bri a headache.)

In really important news today (baseball ), the Yankees-Red Sox game is still tied at 2 going extra innings. A-Rod hit a solo homer, but that's not yet enough to lift the Yanks over the Sox.

The Cubbies are leading the Mets 3-0. Wood is shutting down the Mets, with 6K and 0BB through 5 innings. Yeah, yeah, it's just the Mets. Sosa hit a solo HR in the first inning to start the Cubs scoring.

Phillies crushed the Expos. The Brew Crew are leading the Cards 2-0.

Ouch, that hurts with an infield fly for Boston with 1 out bases loaded in the 11th.
