Barry Bonds .400 Watch Thread

Barry hit .370 in '02 with 149 hits in 403 at-bats.

'03 gave him .341 witih 133 hits in 390 at-bats.

Lets assume that he'll have 400 at-bats this season. Thus, to hit .400 he'll need 160 hits.

So the watch begins.

4/20/2004: 1-for-1, 19 hits total, 141 to go, 149 team games left
4/21/2004: 0-for-1, 19 hits total, 141 to go, 148 team games left (oh and Peavy is a huge vagina)
4/22/2004: DNP, 19 hits total, 141 to go, 147 team games left
4/23/2004: 2-for-2, 21 hits total, 139 to go, 146 team games left (4 IBB)
4/24/2004: 0-for-1, 21 hits total, 139 to go, 145 team games left
4/25/2004: 1-for-2, 22 hits total, 138 to go, 144 team games left (batting average = .512)
4/26/2004: 0-for-1, 22 hits total, 138 to go, 143 team games left
4/27/2004: 0-for-1, 22 hits total, 138 to go, 143 team games left
4/28/2004: 1-for-3, 23 hits total, 137 to go, 142 team games left
4/29/2004: 2-for-2, 25 hits total, 135 to go, 141 team games left
4/30/2004: 0-for-2, 25 hits total, 135 to go, 140 team games left
5/1/2004: 0-for-1, 25 hits total, 135 to go, 139 team games left
5/2/2004: 0-for-0, 25 hits total, 135 to go, 138 team games left

Oh my god. If Bonds were to match Ruth and Ted in the same season, this place would look like Jonestown.

As gammons said, if only 14 of his outs in '02 landed as hits, that would have been .400. Because of all his walks, this is actually a pretty realistic possibility.

the problem is.. it only took him a week to gain 200 points on his average.. so its still early enough that in the same amount of time, he could pretty much cut it back in half

not that I think there is a chance in hell of it happening.. but still..

I came to a realization about Bonds last night - he is a two tool player. All he does is walk and hit home runs. He does nothing else for his team whatsoever - the Giants will be better off when he retires.

He can still steal a base once in a while

And he won't hit .400.

I thought the other Bonds thread was a "general" thread? Why do we need another?

Obviously it's so when he is outted in the Balco trials, we won't be limited to the number of threads in which we'll get to laugh at him heartily.

This is more important. The quest for .400 is greater than his silly quest for Ruth's stat.

Oh, and batting average is independent of steroid use.

Hardly. Obviously the condition one's body remains in over the course of a full season is a huge factor. Now one could say that since Barry doesn't really "play" LF anymore, he's not as prone to wearing down.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who notices his fielding, or lack thereof.

Please, this is a Barry Bonds .400 watch thread, not a discussion about how he's got a lawn chair with his name on it in left field. Please stay on topic.

Absolutely. I may only be able to hit the ball 200ft. and make in a year what he makes in an AB, but I don't keep raisins in my drawers. And first thing every morning, when he's scratching air, he'd give it all up in a second.
