who *should* be the top paid players in baseball

we all know who is making the big dough
and who is being overpaid

rank the top 10 players in terms how their dollar value (not just how well they play, but how well their merchandice sells, packing fans into the park, etc..)

and for extra credit.. list the top 10 overpaid players this season

(just for this season's contract.. not talking about long term and crap like that)

btw.. where is a good site to getting a listing of players ranking comparatively based on salary? might make this a little easier

A-Rod, followed by nine more Yankees.

You started your thread by saying that we all know who is making the big dough and who is being overpaid. If we know, why are you asking?

Bonds.

Pujols -- not yet. Still needs to get 1-2 more seasons in.

But Bonds for sure. I don't recall ESPN preempting any TV for any other players on a regular basis.

Bonds didn't even start his career the way the way Pujols has. He "should" be one of the top paid players in the game according to twikky's criteria.

he would be #2 on my list
besides his performance.. i think he brings in the crowds and i see plenty of pujols merchandise floating around.

its obvious who performs well.. but that is only 1 aspect of earning big bucks

Bonds would be by #1, Pujols #2. Not too sure about the rest right now - possibly Ichiro, Clemens...

well sure.. you take the 2 obvious ones

what about vlad? how are the crowds/merchandising doing now that he is in a larger market?

if maddux would ever put together some wins.. his quest for 300 might make him more valueable this season

not sure who else has major milestones coming.. I guess I could always bump that thread

Eric Gagne is worth a LOT more money.

Kevin Brown and Griffey Jr. are overpaid.

I wouldn't say Bonds is overpaid. He does OK salarywise. I'd say the few people above him are overpaid. No one should be making more than Bonds. Certainly not Manny Ramirez or Delgado.

I thought of Vlad, but even though he is in a larger market - it still just the Angels. I know they are less than two years removed from the Series, but people don't jump for joy when they come to town.

I thought of Maddux, too, but his performance isn't warranting much excitement right now, even though he is so close to 300.

How about Dontrelle? Like you said, he is having the perfect season. He's young, energetic/good personality - people like to see him play.

i dont think anyone is suggesting that bonds is overpaid
(well, except the person saying anyone making more than a million is overpaid )
the bonds answers so far are for who are the most valuable (monetarily) players in baseball.

if Im not mistaken.. Griffey Jr is making about 9 million.. so there have got to be at least 10 people that are more overpaid for this current season.

If you're judging by how well their merchandise sells, you'll probably get a list full of Yankees. Other than Nelly, who pimps Cardinals shit? I believe most people who wear Cardinals merchandise wear it because they're a fan, not because it's the cool thing to do. I'm fine with that, the number of LeBron James jerseys sold because of the hype sickens me.

true
dontrelle revived alot of life into the marlins lastyear.. and drew a ton of fans.. not to mention sold a ton of willis merchandise

hard to say which had the marlins fans more excited last season.. willis or the world series

Actually, according to this chart, he's making 12.5.

well.. i think selling merchandise is just part of the puzzle
drawing fans is another big part.. and the yankees have so many weapons, they all lose credit for drawing fans, because no single person on the team really is the main draw.
and their stats definitly dont measure up enough for that portion of the equation

Maybe the USA Today chart counts deferred money. $12.5 mil sounds about right if you take the total value and divide it by the number of years.
