Corey Dillon to Pats

Dillon to Pats for 2nd rounder
http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/7267133
Patriots trade for Bengals RB Dillon
April 19, 2004

Corey Dillon has finally been granted his wish and has been sent packing by the Bengals.

SportsLine.com has learned that the Bengals have traded Dillon to the New England Patriots for a second-round pick. The Patriots have two selections in the second round and will send the first of the pair (56th overall) to the Bengals.

In addition to the trade, the Patriots have also redone Dillon's contract to make him their feature back of the future. Neither Patriots nor Bengals officials would return calls.

I also posted about this, in the mock draft thread, wondering how it would affect the New England draft board. You have to figure there's a strong possibility the Patriots will now skip RB Steven Jackson to address other needs. Given Ty Law's contract problems and current law enforcement-related adventures, maybe... cornerback?

There's no way the Patroits would have had a shot at Steven Jackson if they stood pat with their 21st pick anyway. That must be why they went ahead and did this deal.

Good, I was hoping the Raider's wouldn't pick up this selfish prick as rumored for a good while.

They have too many egos on that team already.

There's no way NE goes RB in the first round, but they still might on Day 1. Dillon is no spring chicken.

Prior to this Dillon trade, it would make a lot of sense for Pats to take a RB in the 1st round, especially if Steven Jackson drops all the way to 21st.

This makes Dillon and Rudi Johnson keeper league owners quite happy. A great talent. We'll see how well he fits into a team-oriented Pats squad.

Picking Steven Jackson while ignoring their clear LB and G needs would be stupid. Jackson would not clear Philly or Denver in any event, but Jones might.

I totally agree, which has got to be the main reason the Pats went ahead and traded for Dillon.

I can't argue with that at all. Still, I feel like Vilma will certainly be gone and DJ Williams as well. That leaves them with Dansby or possibly Carey. However, if Gamble is available, they might go that way. Or WR. This is huge news for the draft.

What makes things more interesting is that what will Belicheck do with his two R1 picks. He doesn't want to pay them what they will be worth. Now that he has his RB, does he package them to move up to Washington or Detroit and get Taylor (and it will cost more than their low R1 picks to get that high)?

Nice pickup by the Pats! Mebbe returning to feature back status (and a healthy dose of winning) will get him out of his malcontent stage.

Dillon was a stud RB up until last year, so it's a very nice pick-up. And imagine Dillon on a team that wasn't down 14 by half time all the time and abandoned the running game.

This is best for all parties. Corey gets out, Rudi gets a vote of confidence, the Pats get a proven RB, the Stripes get rid of a source of discontent. I hope he does well in his new environs -- except for week 13 when the Bengals head to Gillette.

And let's not overlook the preseason game in Cincy on 8/21. That's should be fun, too.

Im glad the Pats made the trade. Finally a quality back with gamebreaker potential. Maybe a new environment will help Dillion.

The Patriots are in great shape with the draft coming up.

Wow, the pats are looking like the favorites to win it all yet again. I better get out to vegas and get my money on them.. I was to stupid to put my money on them last year prior to going for superbowl. My gf did though, before the season started, made some decent money.

The Patriots won with chemistry. Dillion is a chemistry killer. How will he react when Faulk gets 10 carries a game or the Pats draft a RB? This won't work out well.

Dillon has said that he is really excited to be here. I dont think he is going to be much of a problem. Plus, he restructered his contract, and dumping him wouldnt really hurt the Patriots alot.

Of course he is going to say that. That comment doesn't mean squat. As has been said, we'll have to wait and see if Dillon can shed his 'Leon' mentality.

But its not something they lie about. Except for A-Rod.
