Calhoun to Yanks: "No Thanks!"

UConn head couch Jim Calhoun will be throwing out the opening pitch at the Partiot's Day game in Fenway tomorrow. According to reports on umasshoops.com and espn.com (via the Hartford Courant) he turned down a similar offer from the Yankees because he's a lifelong Red Sox fan and UConn is in Red Sox Country.

Man, this really leaves me conflicted! I've despised Calhoun for years (ever since he and his AD backed out of the UMASS/UCONN series when Calipari coached the Minutemen), but this is a strong show of support for my favorite baseball team. It's also kind of surprising to me that he considers Conn. Red Sox Country, because it's been my experience that there are a lot of Yankee fans there.

Whoa, stop the presses. This is enourmous news that a New England sports figure would refuse the Yankees offer. And it is such a huge shot against the Yankees, too.

*faints*

I am shocked and awed by this earth-shattering piece of news.

It's kind of split....I grew up in CT near NYC so the majority were NY team fans than Boston fans....UCONN is further up near/closer to the MA border so I would think that there are more Boston fans up there...but there is definitely a split in the state.

I guess Sox fans will look for anything that portrays the Yankees in a negative light. I don't know why they should, though. I mean the Yankees are doing a well enough job doing that themselves with their piss poor play thus far.

Connecticut is very much a split state between the Sox and Yankees.

Yup, growing up in coastal Connecticut, even my own family was split between Red Sox and Yankees (I was the oddball Mets fan ).
