I think that's a stupid statement, if you mean it in the "LeBron was going to win it no matter how he played" sense rather than the "these were the best 2 guys coming in, so this is expected" sense.

I mean it as in..

Lebron was going to win it, unless there was a MAJOR difference between him and another player..
Its all part of a hype machine

Lebron will be home counting his money or shooting commercials

The same thing Melo will be doing in about a week

Lebron deserved it...

1. Lebron
2. Melo
3. Dwayne Wade
4. Kirk Hinrich (surprised me a great deal)
5. Chris Bosh

Although I think Melo should've won it I have no problem with Lebron winning it. Good choice either way.

Yeah, even if you think Melo deserved it, or vice versa, the other guy was not a bad choice. Co-ROY would have been fine by me, as most view them 1 and 1a, no matter who you like more.

I disagree, because most thought there was no way James could live up to all the hype.

i dont disagree too much with the choice..
i just feel that melo had to do alot more than match lebron in over to win it, because everyone was ready to hand it to him as soon as he entered the league

Saying it's a good choice is a cop-out, I mean what do you expect, Jarvis Hayes to win ROY? Of course everyone's going to vote for James or Anthony. I agree with twikoff though. You knew James was going to win this.

I find it hard to vote against Carmelo though. The Nuggets won 17 games last year, lost their top player from last year, added one major player in Miller and won 43 games in a far superior conference. That to me speaks volumes.

I have to easily agree with Jericho on this one. compare the numbers.

"James averaged 20.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds, drawing 16 sellout crowds to the Cavs' home arena and several more on the road. James' popularity made his jersey the best seller at the NBA's store in New York and through the league's Web site, and he helped the Cavs improve from 17 wins to 35."

while when you look at Melo...

"Anthony led the Denver Nuggets into the playoffs, averaging 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists. But James, 19, was only the third rookie in NBA history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists, joining Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan."

For a quick recap:
James had 20.9 pts avg, 5.9 assists, and 5.5 rebounds per game
Melo had 21.0 pts, 2.8 assists, and 6.1 rebounds

So Melo beat out James in pts by .1 and rebounds by .6 but lost to James in assists by 2.2...are those 2.2 assists per game THAT important?! Keep reading before you decide...

Cavs only won 17 w/out James last year, and Denver only won 17 w/out Melo last year

Cavs won 35 this year w/ James for a .427% and 26 games out of first, one game back of the 8th spot for playoffs
Denver won 43 this year w/ Melo for a .524% and 15 games out of first, taking the 8th spot for the playoffs

Not only is Denver in the playoffs (im not saying they'll go far, just that Melo got them there), but if the Nuggets were to be placed in EITHER eastern division, the LOWEST spot they'd take division wise would be third AND they would be not eighth in the playoffs, but FOURTH.

I'll be the first to admit that I dont know basketball as well as many other people, but just looking at the numbers really hurts that Melo didn't win it. Either way, isn't giving the award to James going to encourage more players coming out of high school to want to join the NBA draft, the exact thing the NBA didn't want to happen?

Thanks for that post, Alpha. I didn't realize Melo had surpassed LeBron in those categories. So basically the numbers just hurt the argument of LeBron for ROY. But the "stat" that the NBA cares most about is most likely what got LeBron the ROY:
James' popularity made his jersey the best seller at the NBA's store in New York and through the league's Web site,
So what if Melo had more PPG, RPG, his team had a better record, improved more from last year, and made the playoffs. LeBron moves more merchandise, so lhe gets the award.

Good point scott...I guess I made the fatal assumption (like many of us on the board seem to have made) that the politics are left outside of sports. But I guess not.

Well I guess we know that the next ROY would have to be another high school legend in the making...right?
