I don't really see how any team "beats themselves" other then maybe missing free throws. I think its pretty hard to say which takes precedent... is it a team thats playing crappy offense for no reason, or are they playing crappy offense because the other team is playing good defense. That... kinda makes sense.

No team beats themselves. Its a cop out some fans use when they can't deal with their favorite team losing. Many Yankee fans have been using it three years running. Apparently the Yankees are so good they clobbered themselves in three straight World Series.

I heard a bit of it last year in the NBA playoffs as well. Apparently no one won the NBA title last year the Lakers simply "lost it".

You see bad decisions in games like Jason Williams and his off balance three he shot for no reason. What you have to realize though is the defense the Spurs were playing up until that point caused him to rush a shot he might not have taken if he was having success getting into the paint. Therefore Jason Williams didn't beat himself it was just an effect of the Spurs defense. BTW the Spurs made just as many dumb plays and turnovers in the game as Memphis, but down the stretch they found a way to take the game away from Memphis.

I agree "we beat ourselves" should be taken out of the sports language alone with stupid sayings like "the refs caused us to lose" and probably another hundred dumb things athletes say. Not going to happen though. I guarantee if the Lakers lose a series to anybody in the playoffs Shaq will give credit for the loss to everyone but the team that beat them.

Yah Memphis is my favorite team.

Memphis didn't execute offensively in the final 2 minutes and it cost them the game. That's what I'm stating..take it as you will but it's fact.

So, when everyone bitched about the Lakers regular season win against Denver earlier it wasn't about the refs screwing the Nuggets out of a win, the Lakers earned that victory. Right. Even as a Lakers fan I can say the refs handed the win to the Lakers that night with that blown call.

Thank you Boston for demonstrating how way too many teams get into the playoffs these days. 4 game sweep, none of them remotely close or interesting to watch.

Should be 6 teams per conference, division winners get a bye for the first round.

I was speaking generally. If you took my post to mean you specifically you were wrong. Athletes using the we beat ourselves excuse is the real problem anyway. Fans always defend their teams and thats expected. It won't kill a conceited athlete to give an opponent some respect once in awhile though.

Undercut? He had nowhere to go. He was off-balanced. Nachbar just landed on him, then ripped off Malone's jersey.

On the other end though, Nachbar stuffed Malone pretty good.

The undercut was completely inadvertent. Even as a malone hater I know that.

The Mavericks are leading the Kings 44-39 at the half. They look pretty good. Very good chance of tying the series at 2-2.

"Minnesota forward Wally Szczerbiak is expected to be out for at least the rest of the Timberwolves' playoff series against Denver after cracking three vertebrae in his back."

kind of sad that no one talks about the kings-mavs series. It seems to be the only one worth watching. Ugly as it was, it was at least entertaining tonight.

Losing Wally is going to make it tough to get to the finals. Losing THUD is bad enough, now the bench is half of what it used to be. Part of when they had lightning in a bottle before the season ended they had Wally playing well.

They're going to have to revert back to the earlier part of the season when it was just KG/Spree/Cassell carrying the load and winning. Hopefully these nice days off will help that out exhaustion-wise.

This stupid Mavs-Kings series is killing me. Mavs should be up 3-1 with a little luck instead we're gonna exit early. I cannot figure this team out for the life of me.

Peja finally had a good quarter and the Kings barely win on the road. Hopefully, they can close the Mavs out on Wed or THurs whichever day Game 5 is on.
