Cubs fans: A few questions and a poll

IMO, as long as we can keep our current pitching staff around (Wood, Prior, Zambrano and Clement, plus one punching bag or Greg Maddux, although he's filling THAT role right now) we'll be in contention in the Central, as long as the Tribune Company "sees the light" and keeps spending money on good players.

1. How long can we keep these guys together?

Eventually, Steinbrenner will throw an enormous amount of money at Wood or Prior, or both, especially when he sees his zillion dollar offense get mown down by good pitching again, and we'll be in serious trouble if the CT doesn't pony up.

2. Who will replace Moises at LF? I think he's 39 or so and his contract may be coming up...

3. Will Farnsworth eventually turn into a clutch reliever, or will he remain unreliable?(Strikes out the side or walks 4 runs home)?

4. Borowski: Overrated?

5. White Sox/Cubs World Series: Riot damage assessment?

I would also like to request intelligent commentary, not some variation on "The-Cubs-haven't-Won-The-World Series-in-almost-100-years-so-that-means-they-aren't-a-good-team- this- year"...but my hopes aren't high on that one

True...if the BoSox and Cubs make the Series, at least one
long- held fiction would end.

I would like to see them defeat the Bosox as well.

1. Indefinately...prior, wood and zambrano all are signed for 4 more yrs. We will let Clement walk and put in Mitre...we have enough arms to last a while.

2. David Kelton (in all likelihood), but there are a ton of FA OF this offseason.

3. Yes, he is still young. This year is the float or cut-bait yr.

4. Yes and No. He is not a dominant closer, but imagine facing prior (94mph) innings 1-6, farnsworth (100 mph) 7th, Hawkins (96mph) 8th, the Borowski (88 mph) 9th....thats a huge drop in the last inning and tough to read for only 3 AB.

5. CUbs WS damage assessment would be in the $100m range, so maybe $101m...lol, are there really any WS fans?

I chose White Sox.

1. Prior and Zambrano will both at least be around until 2007/2008. Wood will be around until 2006 (with an option for 2007). Clement will probably be gone after this year. Dempster or Guzman will likely fill his spot in the rotation next year.

2. Unless the Cubs win it all, I doubt Alou will be back. The Cubs hold an $11.5 mil option for 2005 ($2.5 mil buyout) so unless he takes a big pay cut he's gone. They could sign a free agent or just give the job to one of their prospects (i.e. Nic Jackson or David Kelton).

3. He could be a decent setup man I suppose but I've never had much faith in him.

4. I don't think he's rated highly so it'd be tough for him to be overrated.

5. Threat Level: Severe

As a Yankee fan, I would love to see the Cubbies beat the Red Sox in the World Series.

This is a hard one. Although I'm a Cubs lifer, I don't entirely hate the Sox. Its more of an inability to care. I reserve my ire for the entire south side instead. I would go with the Cubs beating the Sox. That would be just too ideal. My second pick would be the Yanks.

Good point, Scorpio.

I am still pretty indifferent about the White Sox, but I DESPISE their fans after last year's fiasco.
