Best active pitcher- career totals

Hope the thread title makes sense.

The idea for this poll was inspired by this thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=358146

Reading some of the replies, I thought it would be interesting to see how people would vote on the best of this stellar group of pitchers.

My money is on Clemens: 6 Cy Youngs, 4,000 Ks, 300+ wins.

I voted for Maddux because:

a) 16 straight 15 win seasons is amazing, a paragon of consistency
b) Maddux has had periods of domination that can match any of the others
c) He often gets overlooked (in these types of polls) because his stuff isn't flashy, he's not blowing people away with 95+ fastballs
d) He makes us normal guys feel good about ourselves; he looks like an accountant
e) I ****ing hate Roger Clemens. :D

Maddux is a solid choice, can't make any arguments there.

For what it's worth, the order in which they're listed is the order I'd place them in if I were ranking them.

i voted for maddux

very tough choice between him and roger, so I went with my bias :D

As much as I like RJ (except these past 2 years) there's no way you can't pick Clemens. Those numbers are just too amazing.

I'll take Clemens as #1 - active or inactive.

Rogue588 04-14-04 02:26 PM

Clemens.

Clemens. Best overall.

B.A. 04-14-04 02:54 PM

Clemens, w/ Maddux coming in second.

Clemens no doubt. This will be a good thread idea when he retires. Until then, its him.

You're probably right, now that I think about it. Maybe stipulating "career totals" as the point of division between these guys was not the best choice, as Clemens is pretty much a slam dunk in those terms.

I was thinking more in esoteric terms, in the sense of who is/was the "best" amongst this group, rather than in absolute terms as far who's got the biggest numbers. But it wasn't phrased that way. Damn me! Damn me to heck.

Clemens. As big a Maddux fan as I am, I still believe Clemens is the better pitcher.

Roger Clemens is one of the 5 best pitchers EVER, so he wins this in a landslide.

I really wanted to go with Maddux, but in the end, I couldn't justify it. So I take Clemens, but just barely. Clemens has been less consistent during his career, but what makes me take Clemens is that he's still dominating at 41 yrs of age, while Maddux started losing it at age 36. But if you look at their careers only through age 36, I'd probably take Maddux.

I should add that, IMO, Pedro has the most impressive stats of any of them, but he needs to keep doing it for at least another 7 years to be considered alongside Clemens. And I just don't think he can keep it up.

Clemens, rather easily, IMO.
