Well, not including this current season they would be:

Gagne
Smoltz
Rivera
Wagner
Foulke

That list looks about right to me, just make sure Jerry Manuel isn't handling your closers :)

DarkElf 04-13-04 12:43 PM

Yup, not much debate there. You've got those 5, then it's a pretty big dropoff from there.

fumanstan 04-13-04 01:32 PM

Sounds about right to me.

Mad Dawg 04-13-04 01:35 PM

Two words: Billy Koch.

Trade away all major position players to get him.

After him, I guess I would go with the previously mentioned scrubs.

Shouldn't Percival be up there? Are you guys totally Anti-Angel or something?

I'm totally biased here and am only hoping for the best since I'm a Sox fan but I think Koch can learn to close even with his lost velocity. He struck out 2 batters in 1 inning today in a 12-5 laugher. He's going to get 30 saves this year.

*runs away from thread really fast*

Edit: I retract everything I said yesterday. After today's performance Koch should be put out of his misery. You suck, Koch.

Jericho 04-13-04 05:29 PM

It appears Koch is regaining velocity. I don't know why, but I guess it's something

Foulke is the only questionable guy on that list. But everyone who might "challenge" him is either coming off injury (Nenn, Percival, Hoffman) or has other issues (Urbina, Benitez, etc). So, yeah, unless one of those other guys, especially the injury list, steps up, this is the top 5.

twikoff 04-13-04 05:54 PM

1a. Gagne
1b. Smoltz
3. Wagner

Percival still managed 33 saves last year. Not bad for someone that's not 100%

The Dude 04-13-04 06:05 PM

Hey, just leave Pedro in the entire game; you don't need a bullpen.
Respectfully yours,
G. Little

Of course Smoltz could F up a wet dream right now, so he may not be your best choice.

If Percival ever cleared 60 innings pitched in a season again, then he might make a list like this

Setzer 04-13-04 07:31 PM

Percival is one of the top 5 closers in this league.

I'd say was. Until he's healthy, he's not.

I'd say he's not even the best reliever on his own team. :)
