Career- Clemens, Pedro and the Unit

Right now- Mark Prior, Jason Schmidt and Roy Halliday. I guess I base those picks on guys I'd want to build a team around. I'd pick Roy Oswalt, Javier Vazquez, Barry Zito and Matt Morris as honorable mention pitchers, or guys who might take over the spots of the first three with good seasons.

Due to injuries, ranking the current crop is tough, but here goes:

Pedro
Hudson
Prior

Entire career:

Pedro
Randy Johnson
Clemens

I didnt think the question was about who you would want to build a ballclub around. I thought of it as who you would want pitching for you today, right now.

To clarify, I happen to think that right now (well, mid-season last year, actually) those three were the best pitchers in baseball. They also happen to be pretty young guys, thus, good choices to build a team around.

I didnt mean to imply anything about your picks. I was just making sure that I understood the question. I didnt want to do it wrong.

Aren't we a little quick to collectively suck off Mark Prior? After all, he's only pitched one full season.

Maybe so, but if I needed a pitcher today, I think Id want him to go. Although, I am thinking of switching my order. But thats what first popped into my head.

A lot of love for Schmidt too. Schmidt's only had two years with and ERA under 4, only 1 with an ERA under 3.4, and questionable durability.

I would go:

Top three pitchers (healthy permitting): Pedro, Prior, Kevin Brown

If I wanted actual durability though I'd choose differently

Top all-time active: Clemens, Maddux, Johnson

Top 3 Now: Mark Prior, Pedro Martinez, Kerry Wood (Looks to be back in form and should dominate if he stays healthy)

This requires a little bit of thought...

First the active/career list, which is a little easier.

1. Clemens - I would argue that he may be the best all-time, active or inactive.

2. Pedro - If he retired today, he has better numbers than Sandy Koufax over a similar length of career.

3. Randy Johnson - It's a tough call with Greg Maddux and his soon-to-be 300 wins, but I have to go with the Unit. He actually has a better career winning % than Maddux, plus he could end up with 4000 Ks.

The best 3 pitchers right now? I'm going to stay away from Prior and Beckett, as I don't think they have had enough of a career yet to qualify. If I was starting a team right now, these are the guys I would want to build around (naturally, eliminating some of the older guys):

1. Kerry Wood
2. Roy Oswalt
3. Barry Zito

Right now, Josh Beckett is the game's biggest big game pitcher. World Series MVP and he's picked up right where he left off.

1. Beckett
2. Schilling
3. Clemens

Career:
1. Clemens
2. Maddux
3. RJ / Pedro (tie)

Isn't Prior hurt? What happened to the theory "if he wasn't hurt, he'd be one of my top __ players"
