D-Lowe as a third starter...

He could win 25 games this year.

So is ESPN going to show every Barry Bonds game this year, and every year until he breaks Hank's record? How about a little variety for the deuce?

Hoping he starts out well and pulls in those 15-16 wins this year which would be a huge step up from Estes last year. Also would like to see Hawkins in for an inning and get him rolling.

Yeah, you can't argue with lowe as a third starter..

Interesting to see how my white sox come back after that meltdown to lead off the season. If they get swept out of KC again this year, I think it will be over after the first week. Sox are one of the most moody teams I've seen..

Good luck to maddux, but I think he gets shelled consistantly this year.

Go Sox! Hopefully DLowe's road numbers will be decent this year.

And thank god for the alphabet. I can pretend that the Astros aren't in last.

Who would've thought anyone could say that at any point in the season?

It probably helps that Clemens is throwing in his first NL game.

I'll be watching the Giants/Astros game in HD on the ESPNBARRY network (now offered by Dish).

As for Dmitri young -- I wish astroturf was banned. How many of these kinds of injuries are we going to have to see before we get rid of it?

Agreed. There is now an alternative that seems much safer and realistic. Besides guys like Young ripping their knees up, you see hits like in the first game of that series. A ball bounced past the SS for a sure single, then took off and rolled clear to the wall for a triple. It was disgusting.

Baseball should declare AstroTurf unplayable, and require teams to install field turf or grass, expenses be damned.

see you gotta come strong with the trash talking. if i were a yankee fan retorting the "D-rays" comment, I would have said:

why can't pedro start every game for the sox?

but that just me.

why can't the red sox play the orioles for all 162 games!?

that just doesn't have the right ring to it.

Have you seen the new stuff in the Metrodome? At least on TV, it looks like real grass. And the turf is filled with tiny rubber balls, presumably to make it softer to run on. Right now, every time a ball hits the turf hard, or a player dives, you see a cloud of these rubber balls bounce in the air. Eventually, the rubber will work it's way deeper into the turf so that it stays put.

But I wonder if it'll be any safer for the players in a situation like Dmitri's last night.

You need to have a turf that gives way. Dmitri screwed up his ankle last night because the turf grabbed onto his spike while his forward momentum carried him forward.

Even the best artificial surfaces out there can still be quite dangerous because of this spike-grabbing nature.

I'm pretty sure you'll get to see Barry on the new network this weekend too when the Giants and Padres open Petco Park.

That's my thinking too. The new turf in the Metrodome may be softer to run and dive on, but probably not much safer.

How many turf stadiums are there now? Minnesota, Tampa, Montreal, Toronto. Given that 3 of those are perma-domes, turf won't be completely gone any time soon.

Minnesota needs a new stadium. WIth retractable roof technology readily available, there's no excuse for any of the teams not to have a retractable roof with grass fields. Seattle did it. Arizona did it.

Well, there's a reason Montreal can't do it. They couldn't hold a big enough bake sale to raise money for a new stadium. God knows they won't be able to do it with revenues!
