I can't wait for the playoffs to start. There's nothing like the intensity of playoff hockey. I haven't thought much about predictions yet, I'll post them later.

Can I buy pot from you?

TB, SJ, Colorado, and Boston will be lucky to get outta the first round.

No Scott Stevens=Early Exit for Devs
No Thornton=Boston's gonna have trouble.
TB has gotten smacked by the Islanders this season. Boulin and Grahame have looked like crap.
Detroit going far with Legace as their goalie? No chance....

Amazing end to the regular season in the EC.

NJ loses @ home and the Flyers TIE @ NYI, so Philly wins the division by ONE point and gets the 3rd seed instead of the 6th AND home ice vs. NJ. That was a HUGE.

Really hope Philly can exorcise some playoff demons vs NJ and OTT this season, but they way the limped into the playoffs I'm not holding my breath.

Please.

For starters, if the Wings need more than 5 I'll be amazed. I'll also be pretty surprised if Tampa makes it very far.

I do agree that these should be some excellent playoffs. Some of the 1st round matchups alone are almost enough to make me cream my pants. The Canadian franchises have had a good year, with every one of the making the post-season except Edmonton, who almost made it.

Go BRUINS!!*

*Wishful thinking, they'll be lucky to get past the Habs. Frankly, I'll enjoy watching anyone but the Devils and Wings win it all.

This is what I hope happens. I'd love to see a Detroit and Toronto final. I think whoever wins the Tor and Ott series will win the east. NJ will beat Philly because the Flyers still don't have any goaltending. The Blues will be looking to give SJ some payback from 2000 when 8th seeded San Jose beat the 1st seeded Blues. St. Louis has to get some offense going though and score some goals. The Calgary and Vancouver series will be a great series too, but I just don't think that Vancouver's goaltending will hold up. I wanted to pick Dallas over Colorado because Dallas is playing good right now and Colorado isn't, but after a few games, Colorado will turn things around.

Yeah...I think people seem to be forgetting that Legace has been probably the best back-up goalie in the NHL for a couple of seasons now, and would be starting for 20 other teams at least. And Cujo's ankle injury isn't that big of a deal...he's been practicing at full speed with no ill effects, they are just being extra careful to make sure he is fully healed before they bring him back so as to not risk reaggravating it and he'll be fresh after the first round. Which is a luxury they have with Legace in net. Legace played more than Cujo this year i believe, and they did ok.

Wings over Toronto in 7 for the Cup - a great Original 6 series to bid farewell for awhile....

Western Conference Predictions

I always love to watch the banter between fans of two teams during a playoff series (of any sport, really). I always ask the question of whether the person in question actually knows anything about both teams in the series, or takes other factors (like a rivalry) into account that might impact the games. Usually, most fans make their picks with their heart and not their head.

After saying that, and admitting upfront that I'm a Predator's fan (and my knowledge of the league is bent heavily to the Western Conference), here are my picks:

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Nashville vs. Detroit: Detroit in 7

The rivalry between these teams is nasty. The Predators have always considered Detroit almost like its "oldest brother." Detroit was the top team in the league when Nashville was created and placed in their division. If anybody has watched the Predators play, doubtful unless you're one of their fans, you will know they nearly always play their best against Detroit, just like a little brother that always tries to earn the respect of his older brother. Nashville can win this series, but it is unlikely. Nashville plays harder than just about any other franchise (Calgary and LA noted), and can absolutely irritate the snot out of another team. If Detroit had not been knocked out hard last year in the first round, I might pick this series different. Anyone that thinks that Detroit will dominate every game by two or three goals, I can guarantee you they haven't watched any Predators hockey. Their record against the top teams in the Western conference this year (outside of Dallas) is exceptional and the matchup most favorable to the Predators is a team that relies on skill and speed (like Detroit) as opposed to size and strength. All that said, Detroit is talented enough to win 16 straight games.

Dallas vs. Colorado: Dallas in 6
Working on the assumption that losing all four games in which Turco was serving his suspension was just that, I think that Dallas is peaking at the right time. Add to that the mini-slump that Colorado is in, and I just don't see Colorado taking this series. I'm tempted to give it to Dallas in 5, but I'll make it 6.

Calgary vs. Vancouver: Calgary in 6
Calgary is a team that reminds me of Nashville in that they are hard working, hard hitting, and play with a lot of heart. They also have had good goaltending and scoring from one of the best stars in the game. I don't think Vancouver has enough goaltending and will also miss Bertuzzi too much.

St. Louis vs. San Jose: San Jose in 5
I'm not too fond of St. Louis. Their style is too much geared for the cheap shot/thug mentality for my tastes. I think they've struggled all year to just continue the trend of making the playoffs and now they are going to run into a hot team. Much to my delight, I think they go down quickly.

Second Round

Calgary upsets Detroit in 7

Detroit has too many people just coming off injury and too much unsettlement at goaltending to survive two hard series.

San Jose beats Dallas in 6
Still riding the hot team of San Jose.

Western Conference Finals

San Jose beats Calgary in 6

Iglinia cannot score every goal himself.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay: Tampa in 6

I know that Tampa has had problems with the Islanders this year, but I just have a feeling about Tampa.

Montreal vs Boston: Boston in 6
I'm not very sure about this pick at all. I've seen Boston twice against the Predators (a split with the away team winning both times), and one other time.

Philadelphia vs New Jersey: Devils in 7
This will be one of the best series in the first round of the Eastern Conference. Brodeur gets the Devils this far...

Ottawa vs Toronto: Ottawa in 7
This will be a great series. I think Lalime will quiet a few of his critics in this series.

Second Round

New Jersey vs Tampa Bay: Tampa in 6

...but he can't get them beyond St. Louis and his team.

Ottawa vs Boston: Ottawa in 6
Lalime continues to come up strong.

Eastern Conference Finals

Ottawa vs Tampa Bay: Tampa in 7

High scoring series (especially for a playoff series) that will be fun to watch.

STANLEY CUP FINALS

San Jose vs Tampa Bay: Tampa in 6

A great final series that features a great scoring team in Tampa that finds a way to beat a hot goalie.

Of course, what do I know?

They dug themselves a hole. They played their asses off this last month and clinched their 25th consecutive playoff berth on the 81st game of the season. I just hope they're well rested.

I would love for Tampa to take the title. I live in Florida and even though I am a panther fan, it would be nice to have the cup here.
We did it with the Bucs and Marlins. So let's go Lightning!!

Let's hope this is not a preview of things to come!!

I hope Montreal at least takes out Boston in the first round, like they did last year.

Being a huge Dallas Stars fan living in the middle of Toronto may skew my perception of the playoffs slightly.. none the less here are my faithful predictions..

(read i hate the leafs, their fans, their ownership etc..)

east
tampa vs. nyi - tampa in 6
boston vs. montreal - boston in 7
philadelphia vs. nj - nj in 5
toronto vs. ottawa - ottawa in 7 (i think they are finally due..)

west
detroit vs. nashville - detroit in 6
sj vs st. louis - sj in 7
vancouver vs. calgary - calgary in 6
dallas vs. colorado - dallas in 6

round 2
tb vs. nj - nj in 6
boston vs. ottawa - ottawa in 6

detroit vs. calgary - detroit in 6
sj vs. dallas - dallas in 7

conference finals
ottawa vs. nj - ottawa in 7
detroit vs. dallas - dallas in 6

stanley cup
ottawa vs. dallas - dallas in 7

at least thats teh way i hope it turns out.. both teams i picked for the finals may be gone in 2 weeks and it would be a huge shock... but anything can happen!

Tampa isn't going to get out of the first round. They play a style that's perfect for the Isles to contend with, unlike say, Toronto, who the Isles really have trouble with. The key to that series will be the play of the Isles' blueliners, especially Aucoin and Hamrlik, and the Islanders' dominance of Tampa in the 3rd period. (Outscored TAM 10-1 in the 3rd period this season.) Plus, Peca is healthy for the first time in 2 years. St. Louis won't be able to get anywhere with Peca shadowing him. Isles in 6.

As for the others, knowing full well that my NCAA bracket stunk pretty bad....

Detroit over Nashville in 6
San Jose over St Louis in 6
Vancouver over Calgary in 7
Colorado over Dallas in 6

Islanders over Tampa in 6
Boston over Montreal in 6
Devils over Flyers in 5
Toronto over Ottawa in 7
