Pudge alone should be worth a couple more wins.

Well, unlike last year, this year they do actually have a few major leaguers on their squad, so I'll go with "better".

They'll be a ~55 or so win team, maybe 60 if they're lucky (they're in a rather weak division overall, which helps)

Pudge is going to be a big help with the pitching staff, plus they're going to have fairly good up the middle D with Guillen and Vina.

They'll do better. Possibly make it to the World Series with a little luck.

They could win 70. Maybe.

They should be improved this year. Pudge should help out their pitchers a lot and now they've actually got a guy who can close games for them.

I'm going with +20 wins. The guys they acquired don't do much for the longterm vision, but they'll at least return to "Devil Ray" "respectability" this year.

{Oxymoron intended...}

They have to do better, Pudge is worth atleast 5-10 more wins.

Yes, it's nearly impossible to do worse than they did last year...

I can't imagine them doing worse. They're barely improved. Don't believe all the hype of how they've made big strides. But you look at their crappy division and how they really can't get any worse and I have to figure they will win 50+ games

I expect at least 10 more wins than last year. Probably closer to 15 or 20.

Exactly, just his game calling and defense will help a lot, not to mention his clutch hitting.

But still, I'd be surprised to see more than a 10 win improvement.

Better, and they won't be in last place. Cleveland will be.

Man, it's still only spring, and you're already suffering from heat stroke out there in the desert.

heh. It was like 90+ degrees today.

Seriously, I think on paper the Tigers have a better lineup than Cleveland.

Maybe, but Cleveland probably has a little better pitching (though that isn't saying much)

Even if Detroit is better, at least Cleveland has some prospect of being good in the future. I think detroit has been "rebuilding" since Jack Morris and Alan Trammell played there

Lineup - yes, agreed, slightly better, but better nevertheless. But their (injury-prone) starters better stay healthy because their bench looks pretty weak.

However, here's why I think Cleveland will finish ahead in the standings (71 wins v. 64 wins)...

Starting pitching - Cleveland's rotation more than offsets the lineup, and that's not because Cleveland's rotation is all that good, but because, Pudge or no Pudge, Detroit's rotation is horrible. IMO, the only guy worth a shit is Bonderman. Who knows, maybe Jason Johnson will surprise me. Then again, the pitching poor Orioles didn't even want him, which says something. Cornejo and Maroth, forget it, their peripheral stats just suck ass. Not even Pudge can turn straw into gold.

Detroit picked up Urbina to close games, but I think Riske is better as well.

Hey Deftones!

Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus picks the Tigers to improve by 30 games and finish ahead of Cleveland.

(and if Milton Bradley is _given_ away, I might agree with you guys too).

Wow, look at that. I am smarter than I thought!

Actually, I think ESPN and The Sporting News both predicted the Tigers to be better than Cleveland as well.

That makes 2-0... First in their division... Let's see if we can repeat the 35-5 start from 20 years ago!
