Test them all - if they test positive, suspend them for a quarter of the season. If they test positive again, suspend them for an entire season. A third positive test results in a life-time ban. Any player that is suspended loses their paycheck during that period.

to the asterisks next to any and all records achieved while a player was on the juice.

of course.. the asterick idea has a MAJOR flaw

we all know that the steroids issue has been around for quite some time.. so are you going to go back and put an asterick by every single record achieved in the past 20, 30, etc.. years.. and just assume all those guys were on it as well..
or just let those guys all get away with it and let their records be the ones that people thing are "legit"

I still think the economics of baseball is far bigger issue. Heck, ever since Brady jacked 51 in 1996, I figured most of these guys were on something.

Of course. No one wants the biggest stars of the game to be humiliated any further. There will be more empty calls for a tougher policy, but all parties other than some players who don't want to be suspected have too much to lose.

So no one answered my earlier question in the other thread. If the biggest offending substance were to be Human Growth Hormone, wouldn't that not show up on a test?

41.0% 20-game suspension
34.2% Season suspension
13.0% 3-game suspension
6.1% No punishment for first offense

how in the hell could anyone feel that first offense of roid use should give any longer suspension than CORKING A FRIGGIN BAT??

1st offense - 5 games (will be appealed to 3)
2nd offense - 20 games (will be appealed to 10-15)
3rd offense - [BANNED]

but if your going to do it.. include other drugs into the 3 offense rule, or add this to existing 3 strike rules

Can someone refresh my memory on what happens if players test positive for other illegal drugs, such as marijuana or cocaine? Is it an automatic suspension?

Okay, so I've got the answer to this. HGH doesn't show up in standard drug tests. I'd say that anyone who is "smart" isn't going to be caught using a testable substance. But anyone of them could still be coursing with HGH and not have a problem. I guess I'd ask 'em to "test me everyday" too if I knew they couldn't find anything.

Just to keep things in perspective, and the reason why I asked about cocaine use was that Darryl Strawberry was suspended 60 days when he tested positive for cocaine the first time in 1995, 120 days when he tested positive again 4 years later, and then suspended for a full year when he tested positive the 3rd time.

Of course, this is weighing cocaine vs steroids...

I voted "test them all.. if you show up positive, your suspended", but this assumes that the policy "starts now" and it is made clear that you will be suspended if you test positive. What has happened to date is in the past, so none of that matters to me -- it's too late to do anything about it, especially the use of asterisks.

yep

also.. anywhere hear the blurb on sportscenter this morning
I missed exactly what they said.. but it sounded like they were talking about random steroid testing in all cases where there is probably cause. and that a baseball official said he believed it would start in days, rather than weeks???
is there news from the players union already?

I'm not only for the asterisk, I'd be fine if they just removed the record entirely. I doubt they'd do either even if the player admitted to using them the season they got a record.

want to make that retroactive and remove all records for all the historic players that we are pretty sure were on the juice?

if you start removing records now. you pretty much make all records in the past 30 or so years worthless, because some players may have just been lucky enough to play out their career before all of these issues really came to a head. This is not a new tread.
For many years now, everyone has been saying we are getting such high offensive numbers because we are in a juiced ball era. Maybe the truth was that it was a juiced player era.
