According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers have the inside track on signing Ivan Rodriguez.

Or at least they do unless a decent team wants him. Rodriguez will sign with the Tigers if he has to, but he'd probably rather use them in order to get the Cubs or the Dodgers involved. Source: Detroit Free Press

NO WAY does Pudge sign a contract with Detroit. No way!

The Tigers probably only want him so they can trade him for prospects at the deadline.

I agree though. No way.

Here's the article....though I have to ask, why are you all so emphatic that he would NEVER go there? he went to Florida who wasn't much, and the Tigers have had a tremendous off-season and made some large upgrades to the team....I think this is exactly the kind of situation Rodriguez covets, where he can be Number 1, as well as go to an American League team where he could be a DH if need be as an aging catcher....makes perfect sense to me....

Tigers have an inside track on Rodriguez

January 15, 2004

BY GENE GUIDI
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Sources close to negotiations between the Tigers and Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez said Detroit appears to have the inside track on signing the free-agent catcher.

The Tigers reportedly have impressed the Rodriguez camp with their desire to bring him to Detroit.

Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, told the Associated Press that negotiations for the catcher are down to "a couple of clubs," believed to be the Tigers and the Chicago Cubs.

Boras is also the agent for free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux, who has received an offer from the Cubs thought to be worth a total of $14 million to $15 million. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he expects Maddux to take his time before deciding. It's possible the Cubs could try to sign Maddux and Rodriguez, but more likely they will settle for one. If Maddux signs with the Cubs, it would help the Tigers' chances of landing Rodriguez.

The Tigers, who haven't participated in the free-agent market in recent years, have signed outfielder Rondell White, second baseman Fernando Vina, right-handed starter Jason Johnson, right-handed reliever Al Levine and backup catcher Mike DiFelice. They also acquired shortstop Carlos Guillen from Seattle.

And anyone who thinks Petitte or Clemens did this as a "slap in the face" of Steinbrenner or the Yankees is just delusional and pathetic. They followed their hearts back to their homes. I'm sure they've both fulfilled any type of career goals they had while they were in NYC and now they can go live their dream lives in the Lone Star State.
No one said or implied that either did it as a slap in the face. But rather just that the fact that Clemens unretired and came back to the astros is a slap in the face (as the reactions in the NY media show). Nobody said it was done intentionally by the players to be a slap in the face.

I'm just happy to see atheltes making their playing decisions on more than money lately with both this and things like Payton and Malone playing for the lakers for like 10x what they could have got if they just wanted to maximize their finances.

Now that the Orioles still have some money to spend, who are the top notch pitchers that they can go after? Also do you think they will go for more bats such as Magglio?

I'm not positive he won't, but I don't think he will (unless no other team wants him, since he's burned a few bridges already). If you were a player and were at the tail end of your career, would you want to go to a team that will probalby lose 100+ games again this year?

Yeah he went to Florida, but Florida was a much different situation. Florida finished just barely below .500 the previous season and had a lot of young talent. Detroit lost 119 games last year and has very little young talent.

Detroit had a tremendous offseason? That is truly funny. Although I think IRod still might sign with Detroit. For the simple reason, they seem to be the only team willing to pay him any significant money for more than a year.

But it's a lot different than last year and IRod signing with Detroit. First off, Detroit was way worse in 2003 than Florida in 2002. Second, Pudge was coming off an injury plagued 2001 season and was hoping for big bucks. He didn't get it. The idea was to prove his health and then sign a big contract. Didn't happen. So the incentive to sign a similar deal is less. Plus Florida is a nice place to play (warm) and has a decent size hispanic community. Detroit is neither.

But unless anyone will actually pay him for than a 1 year deal, I suspect he will go to Detroit. Maybe he should have signed with the Os?

You have to put "tremendous" in perspective. For years now, the Tigers have been notoriously idle during the free agent signings. The only thing they would do is sign a Craig Paquette for 5 years and way too much money. This off-season they have signed Vina, Rondell White and Jason Johnson, while also trading a bucket of balls for Carlos Guillen. All of whom have reasonable contracts (overpaid still a bit perhaps, but not long term), and now may sign Pudge.

For teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, etc this would be of little consequence, but Tigers fans haven't seen any commitment to improve in a long, long time. Not to mention the fact the Tigers are in the least competitive division in baseball.

I think it's tremendous! (If they don't get Pudge, it's only fantastic...)

Assuming Ponson passes his physical, you've got two, and I'm using "top notch" in relative terms to who's available.

- Greg Maddux
- Orlando Hernandez

Neither are good fits for the Orioles IMO.

But you can look at the list at the top of this page and see for yourself. Maybe there's someone else you like (but I doubt it).

Padres signed RHP Adam Eaton to a two-year contract.

Eaton, who went 9-12 despite a 4.08 ERA last season, won't be eligible for free agency until after 2006, so the Padres could still go to arbitration with him again after this contract expires. The 26-year-old is a very good pick in NL-only leagues this year.

The Padres are talking to free agent Mark McLemore about a reserve job.

McLemore could probably get more playing time elsewhere. The Padres bench seems pretty well set with Ramon Vazquez, Jeff Cirillo, Terrence Long, Brian Buchanan, Tom Wilson and possibly Todd Sears. Source: North County Times

{Why McLemore? Padres have solid depth and the 25-man roster is full. Possible precursor to another trade?}

Cubs signed RHP Joe Borowski to a two-year, $4.3 million contract.

He'll make $2 million this year and $2.3 million in 2005. If Borowski could have lasted another season as the Cubs' closer, he would have done quite a bit better than $2.3 million next year. Still, with LaTroy Hawkins gunning for his job, he was probably smart to take the money now.

Sammy Sosa, who chose not to exercise the out clause for the final two years of his four-year contract, would like a contract extension.

"I used to say I wanted to play until I was 37, 38," the 35-year-old Sosa said. "Not anymore. Now I think I can play until 40, 41. I want to be part of the 700-homer club and be one of the legends in baseball. I'll have another good year, which is over 40 homers. I think I can get there." There's no real chance that the Cubs will add years on to Sosa's deal before the start of the season. Maybe it will happen next year, but only if the outfielder is willing to take a pay cut. He's due $33 million in the final two years of his current deal. Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Yep, pathetic.

I'm going to have a very hard time rooting for them as long as AOL owns them.

Is Sammy the next Rickey Henderson? Sounds like he is going to try and stay around as long as possible just to pad his stats.

To be fair, if healthy, I think a power hitter can stick around longer and still play great. Compared to a contatct hitter like Henderson or relied a lot on speed.

Look a Bonds, he's 39-40 I think and pretty much inarguably the best in the game still.

I think power hitters' careers decline faster than contact hitters. Hitters like Bonds, Aaron, Mays are anomalies, imo. Power hitters tend to have shorter careers because their bodies break down on them. Steroids haven't helped in this regard either.

I agree. I was more saying that Sosa fits in with the Anomolies.

Anyone playing into their 40's at a high level is an anomolie, but your right in that there have been more contact hitters. I was more singling henderson out as speed was as much a part of his game in his prime as being a contact hitter.

Old player skills typically include striking out a ton, which is something that contact hitters obviously don't do a lot of. High power/walk players who K a lot are walking a dangerous line when it comes to bat speed. Lose a bit off your stroke and you move from '99 McGwire to '01 McGwire.

Jim Thome/Sammy Sosa won't age well for that reason, but the Bonds/Sheffield/Pujols model of hitter can stand to lose a few tics off his swing and still put a reasonable amount of juice on the ball, if only to hit to the opposite field.
