The Chicago Bears sold their name!

No longer will the old franchise, which was there at the NFL's creation, refer to itself exclusively as the Chicago Bears. From now on, whenever possible, it will be "Bears football presented by Bank One."
This is asinine, and sets IMHO a dangerous precedent. I wonder if they'll change their uniforms and helmets to incorporate a Bank One logo too.

For its money, the bank will get signs all over the stadium, advertisements on the Bears' radio broadcasts and nongame television programs, the franchise's banking business, a presence at training camp, and a sponsorship role in the team's community outreach efforts.

What's next Soldier Field and Lambeau? Nothing's sacred anymore.

But this keeps my hopes up:
The Packers have since agreed to sell the rights if only the $100 million goal is reached.
But the possibility of reaching $100 million seems remote. Officials representing the city and the Packers say they can discern no interest from companies, either locally or national.

Several points:
1) Personally, I think any company would be considered stupid to put their name on Lambeau Field. I think a lot of fans would resent the company for putting their name on such a historic field.
2) "Invesco" Field is rarely called that here in Denver. It's Mile High no matter who owns the naming rights.
3) As for the Bears, well, all I can say is that it's a sad sad day for sports.

Maybe the Bears will use some of the money to help the state pay for the renovation of Soldier's Field. Are the Bears paying for any of the renovation or are the taxpayer's picking up the entire tab? And how high is the cost of the renovation running now? Anybody from Chicago please fill us in. Thanks.
I'd like to see the Bank One logo across the front of the jersey's like you would see in European football (soccer). That would look sharp.

As long as we're on the subject of the Bears and Soldier Field.....
Can anyone show us a post-renovation picture of it? I haven't been hearing good things.

This was inevitable. Look at Japanese baseball clubs - they take the name of the corporate owner; not the city they play in. Been that way for decades.

If I am in the marketing dept of a company, I would aggressively pursue naming rights for new (or 'young') venues because they stick. I would certainly avoid established venues with well known names.
One need only look at the 2 professional sports venues in the DC area to see that it works: MCI Center and FedEx Field.

Not from the seating but you can walk around the area - guess it's part of the concourse now.
The stadium is awful. It is a huge eye-sore on the lakefront.

I was watching PTI and they were talking about it. Wilbon was like disgusted with the bears chaning the name, its kinda like U.S. Cellular field, no one will call it that everyone will still call it Comisky Park and will continue to call them the Chicago Bears.
Wilbon also said that Soldier Field was a landmark so theres no way they could sell the staduim and instead the Bears do the next best thing and sell there name.

The new stadium is hideous in real life....it may have new luxuries on the inside, but its barf inducing on the outside. The columns just look out of place.
And the Bears should be ashamed of themselves over this move.

meh, it's not suprising to me. The McCaskey's are greedy, just look at the what they allowed to happen to Soldier Field just to get in some luxury suites. Like Comiskey Park, no one will say it that way. sometimes when my dad(life long sox fan) says comiskey, i annoy him by saying U.S. Cellular Field but he just tells me to stuff it

Here are some before and after conceptuals. They are pretty close to what it actually looks like now. It still seems like the upper deck dwarfs the columns even more in person.
