Roy retiring

Patrick Roy has apparently made his decision.
According to a report in the Boulder Daily Camera, the Colorado Avalanche netminder has decided to retire after 18 seasons in the NHL.
Roy, the winningest goalie in NHL history, could make his announcement as early as Tuesday, sources outside of the organization told the newspaper.
The Avs were upset by the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Since then, Roy had said he would contemplate his future and not announce his final decision until the end of the postseason. The Ducks and Devils open the Stanley Cup finals Tuesday in New Jersey.
"Every year I come in, I don't know how many more I have," Roy at the end of the regular season. "The last three, four years, I say, 'That could be the last one.'"
The 37-year-old Roy has 551 career victories, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player of the playoffs, three times. Roy has also won four Stanley Cup rings: two with Montreal and two with Colorado. He has said he will announce his career plans at the conclusion of this year's playoffs.
He told The Associated Press last week that he was 90 percent sure of his decision, but wanted to wait until he's absolutely certain.
"I think it's important when you've played for 18 years, you have to take your time, you have to be patient and you have to make sure it's the right decision,'' Roy told The AP.

I hope he stays another year or two, I would like to see him go out on top rather than a first round upset. He is the reason I stopped liking the Habs and started routing for the Avs.
I have enjoyed watching him win Stanley Cups with Montreal and Colorado and hope I have not seen him play for the last time.

This is really good news for the rest of the Western Conference and the NHL. Does suck for Colorado though.

Le gardien Patrick Roy annoncera sa retraite mercredi à 14 heures à Denver après une carrière de 18 saisons dans la Ligue nationale de hockey.
C'est ce qu'a confirmé Jean Martineau, vice-président communications de l'équipe.

Link? Besides, Martineau wouldn't step on Patty's toes like that. He most likely confirmed there was a news conference scheduled for tomorrow.

See ya later, Patricia!
Maybe this will convince Forsberg to leave for Sweden now, because they have no goalie and there's nothing out there that can keep them among the elite teams.
The Wings still have the rights to Hasek. So, if Colorado begs, we might let them have him (if he's interested in coming back) for Sakic, Hejduk, and Blake.

In honor of Patrick, my favorite Patrick Roy memory:

Getting a butt-kickin' from Mike Veron!

Scratch Cechmanek off of your list Avs fans. He's in LA now.
Osgood is still available. I repeat, Osgood is still available.
Honestly, Burke would be the best fit, but with his age and back problems he might be too big of a gamble, especially since the Coyotes would probably ask a lot for him.
If you don't get Khabibulin, I think you might really be in some serious trouble.
Not that that would make me happy in any way.

My favorite memory - behind Vernon kicking his whiny ass - was the 11-1 drubbing Detroit handed Montreal that make him quit....literally....like the cry-baby he is.
He was an awfully good goalie for sure...but goddamn, he is one obnoxiously bitchy prima donna.
