Maryland - Duke I (2003)

#1 Duke at #15 Maryland
Sat 1:30, ABC

We finally get to see Duke play a legitimate opponent on the road. Heck, this is only their 2nd trip outside of Carolina and it is already the middle of January. They have run up an impressive 12-0 record but most of those wins were over cupcakes at home.

Maryland has beaten a #1 team 7 times in history - that is the most by any college program. They did it last year in impressive fashion.

I actually think the loss to Wake could help Maryland. Coach Williams was not pleased with his starters and made them sit on the bench for an extended period of time Wednesday. When they came off, they certainly responded - I think that will carry into this game. They should be fired up about this game and you know the Comcast Center will be rocking.

Whenever you play Duke, it comes down to guard play. If you contain their guards, your chances of winning are that much better. Hopefully, MD's experienced senior tandem of Blake and Nicholas can match (and/or contain) the tandem of Duhon and the freshman, JJ Reddick. Maryland's game plan against the Dookies is always the same - pound the ball inside - this time to Ryan Randle.

Should be a great one.

Have the wizards at Maryland officially banned the newspapers now? Also, don't hold your breath that this is going to be a good game either. The way they looked against Wake, I have one word for you: damn. Duke by a dozen.

They lost a close game on the road to an upper echelon ACC team. It is to be expected. You wouldn't know about these kinds of things since Coach K doesn't schedule road games until January.

Duke didn't exactly impress me either the other night. I guess Coach K doesn't teach defense. Of course they did what they had to do when playing at home.

This'll be a great game. I think Maryland really pump themselves whenever they roll into Cameron or the Dukies come to Maryland. It'll be interesting to see how well Blake guards Duhon since he guarded Williams so well last year.

I think it will be close with Duke pulling away in the second half and winning by 10-15.

I hope I'm wrong, but UMD hasn't shown me anything this year. They don't have a go to guy with Dixon gone.

RD You seem confused. Duke will have the lead by 7-8 going into the final minute before Free Throw Derby erupts adding another 4-5 points to the mix. Just sit back and wait ...

But a little about scheduling: I feel sure that you are aware of the several year contracts that non-conference teams have with each other. Is it Krzyzewski's fault that Michigan is no longer a powerhouse team in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge (Which Maryland couldn't pull out a win for the conference, BTW)? Or that UCLA really fell off of the face of the earth this season? I would say not. Even the writers had UCLA ranked at #14 when they met in November, but you keep whining about the slack schedule that Duke has. Puhleeze.

If you'll notice in one of the earlier threads, I said that it wasn't Coach K's fault that UCLA and Michigan were down this year. However, the lack of a road or neutral (outside of Carolina) contest is certainly something I can blame on Coach K. Personally, I think it is a bad idea to not play 1 or 2 big road or neutral non-conf games - this could definitely hurt a team like the Devils come tournament time.

I commented on their lack of strong opponents with respect to their lofty ranking. You can and should certainly hold the lack of strong opponents against Duke (whether their fault or not) when ranking them against other teams.

(Oh and fair comparison btwn Maryland's Big-10 Challenge task and Duke's task - Maryland played RPI #15 Indiana in Indianapolis while Duke got to play RPI #51 Ohio State in Greensboro )

Duke by double digits easily. Duke's pressure defense in the half court will kill us.

Welcome to life on the road in ACC, Dookies.

Maryland did exactly what you have to do (and what I predicted) to beat Duke. You get physical and beat them in the paint.

to you Maryland disbelievers.

I guess Coach K will be ordering extra free throw drills this week. Not so easy to hit those foul shots outside of Cameron, ain't it?

I'm sure the Dookie fans figured blowout when they were up 13-3 early. They were right.

Oh and that is now 8 #1s to go down in College Park.

I love the spark the freshman added today. Caner-Medley stepped up in the first half and knocked down a few #3's when MD was down. Gilchrist and McCray had some real nice minutes in the second half. What happened to Garrison today? He didn't play at all.

I noticed the same thing. C-M hit some big 3s early on, and what Gilchrest and McCray did in the 2nd half was a very pleasant surprise. Needless to say, the Terps won't miss a beat at the point when Blake graduates. Yeah - I don't think Garrison played. I think this is the genius of Gary Williams as a game-day coach - he knows what players (and minutes for those players) give him the best chance to win against a particular opponent.

I agree. I think Gilchrist has the ability to be a much better play maker than Blake is. Blake doens't have the ability to drive the lane like Gilchrist can.

no kidding, they said on TV that Duke had played only Clemson and North Carolina A&T on the road.

Well, I am eating my crow now - all Duke had to do was win by a hair, I didn't predict blowout or anything. They shut down everything Duke had but Dahntay Jones. What was in the water up there? The Terps missed TWO free throws, wtf?!!!

Congrats Terp fans, enjoy it while it lasts.

By the way, Chris Duhon - I would think twice about leaving school early for the NBA - you are one of the most overrated players in the country - all you can do is handout assists and play good D, but can you freakin' score when it matters? No - stay in school buddy, just look at your friend Mike Dunleavy.

By the way, is it me or is Steve Blake having a disappointing senior year?

I wish Drew Nicholas would see the light and transfer to Duke.

It's been lasting a while now and shows no signs of stopping in the near future. So yes I am enjoying it.

I wouldn't saying Blake's having a disappointing year. He's averaging over 11 points and over 7 assists per game. Considering he doesn't have as many offensive weapons to pass the ball to, I would say he doing pretty good.

Most of us who watch a lot of ACC basketball, except for Duke Vitale, have been saying the same thing about Duhon for the last several years.

Re: Blake...like zak said, he doesn't have the weapons around him that he has had in the past (Morris, Baxter, Dixon, Wilcox, etc) and he is not the kind of player who can consistently be the high scorer. He has had a few underwhelming performaces this year, but I love the leadership he brings to the table.

Well, I had it backwards. And I'm quite happy that I did.

Hopefully MD will play with that intensity the rest of the year. That's been their main problem, from the few games I've watched anyway. They just seemed kind of lethargic to me since the Indiana game.

If they can play like they did today they can beat anyone.

Not just recently, but I have always thought Duhon was a little overrated, too.

In regards to Blake, I sometimes forget about the talent that has left there lately, but I just imagined him having a great season because I thought he had a great tournament run last year and it would carry over a little more consistently. Your right, not everything can be seen just by looking at stats, such as his floor leadership.

In all honesty, I thought Blake had a rather mediocre tournament last year. He played better during the regular season that he did during the tournament. In fact, I believe that Nicholas (who mainly backed up Blake at point last year) played more minutes per game in the tournament than he did during the regular season.
