Which would you rather have?

1) Your favorite sports team a perennial contender for the championship, yet continually failing to achieve it (*cough* Portland hoops)

or

2) Your favorite sports team mediocre for a number of years, breaking through for a year and winning the title, and then returning back to mediocrity (Patriots, anyone?)

This question does not really seem to apply to leagues without a real salary cap.

I'll take #1

What fun is it to know your team is going to suck ass every year and not even have a chance. Sure the feeling of the letdown loss during the playoff's must suck just as much, but at least you have that excitement during the championship run.

#2 Winning IS everything.

sure I'd like #3, like brizz said. But given the choice, the clear answer to me is #2

A point of clarification -- Teams that would fit into the #1 category are the Atlanta Braves, Portland Trailblazers, Post-1994 SF 49ers, etc. These teams always have a legitimate shot at the title but rarely, if ever, come through.

I'm a huge BRAVES fan, and personally, I'd like to see them fall. As it is, I'm not even interested until after the All-Star Break because I know they'll win their division. It's time to win a Series, or just be mediocre again.

Did I just say that?

#1 - the reason why I lost interest in the Utah Jazz.

#2 - the reason why the NY Giants are my favorite professional team.

Since my city hasn't had a major sports championship since 12 years before I was born, I'd go with #2.

For the Marlin fan... there's #3... from mediocrity, to a title, to complete suck.

I picked #2. Half of the fun winning a championship is watching the team being built. I enjoyed watching the Ravens go from being terrible to medicore to the best team in football now back in a rebuilding phase. What fun would it be if your team is always one of the best. IMO it takes some of the enjoyment out of the game. I'm not saying I want any of my favorite teams to be as bad as the Bengals, but winning all the time takes some of the element of surprise (like a big upset) out of the game.

I've been a semi-Blazer fan for the past 4 years or so and every year, they just break your heart. #1 sucks. #2 still kinda sucks but at least you get a championship and a parade.
