Marvin Lewis is the Bengals' new chief

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/foo...lewis_bengals/

The Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday evening named him their ninth head coach, giving him the opportunity that had eluded him in the past.

"I'm excited to get started," Lewis said from his Mobile, Ala., hotel room, where he is scouting Senior Bowl workouts. "I'm happy for my family that it's over, and I'm happy for all my friends and peers who have kind of gotten caught up with it emotionally as well. It's almost been harder on them that it has been on me. Now I get a chance to prove them all right."

Poor guy... I guess he really was desparate for a head coaching job.

He is thinking he would like to have his shot rather than being second banana to Spurrier. Frankly, I can't say I blame him.

The Bengals could easily be a contending team. Their defense has plenty of solid players, as their 2001 performance showed. On offense, Dillon and Warrick (provided he finally breaks out the way he should) could be a terrific tandem. Of course they need a QB, preferably a solid veteran. In all likelihood the team will need one or two 7+ win seasons to woo any QB worth noting. I think that will happen.

I should sheepishly admit that I predicted the Bengals to make the playoffs this year. Ouch.

Or he's thinking he wants to be the next Ray Rhodes. A great defensive guy who's not cut out to be a head coach. I think with him being black he only has one shot and this is tough place to take your chance. If he wins people will say he's a great head coach and wonder why it took him so long to become one. If he losses (how can he not seeing how that team is run)then people will say that he was not ready to be a head coach.
