Anyone catch Lebron James' new ride?

Apparantly he's rolling around in a brand new Hummer. His mom took out a loan to buy it for him.

The TV said a brand new H2 with 3 TV's in it. I believe the [email protected] starts around 50K, then to get it pimped out...

So, what kind of work does his Mom do? Or is this from the Chris Weber support an athlete fund?

If she did take a loan out, what'd she use as collateral? Her kid?

I heard the Ohio high school sports association is taking a look to see if she got some extra gifts from Nike or Addidas. A hummer would totally be conspicuous.

I'm sure that, considering how much $$ her kid will be making soon, getting a loan wasn't too hard.

here is a short transcript of LJ's mom and the loan officer

mom: you heard of lebron james?

loan officer: yeah? baskeball player, right? phenom.

mom: i'm his mother and i need $50,000.

loan officer: great!! no problem! sign here, please. use my pen.

I also heard that his mom and family lived in subsidized housing as well, it must be nice to get 50,000 and laughing at the govt since thier helping you pay for your house.

they should watch the movie "blue chips"

I heard that Lebron was always rollin in a new Explorer before his platinum hummer

It was probably more like:

Guy: Are you Lebron James' mother?
Mom: Yes
G: We he like to drive an H2 with 3 TV sets?
M:Sure, how much?
G: Here, you just give it to him to dirve, and we will discuss payment later
M: We only get 1, I was hoping to get a black one too...

It was a used '95 Explorer (according to ESPN magazine a few weeks ago).

An H2 huh? Gosh, I wonder how his college eligibility is holding up, considering he still supposedly thinks about college...

This kid is so overexposed, it has gotten annoying as hell...

He better not pull a Willis McGahee although I'm sure that he has taken out some kind of insurance.

In every article I have read about him, they keep saying that he still hasn't decided between the NBA and the NCAA, exactly. It's stupid, I know, I don't even know why they still bring it up.

He brings up college when ever their hasn't been a story done on him in a few weels.

I had a friend who was at the Adidas camp last summer watching and he said James showed up with a "King James" shirt on and alot of diamonds with a huge posse. For how poor his family is supposed to be their is no way he hasn't accepted some gifts.

Now honestly:

I know NCAA has sanctions (supposedly) about a player receiving gifts or cash.

Is there any kind of rule regrding this for H.S. kids. I mean if he has no intentions of going to college, does it matter if he loses elagibility?

i dont think there are specific rules
because they were trying to decide if he should be able to have the big endorsement deal while still in highschool
i think that ended up not happening.. but the fact that it was even in question makes you wonder

I believe it differs from state to state. Here in Michigan there is talk of Detroit Country Day forfeiting their titles they won when Webber played there.

Anyway, I had been hoping the Pistons would get James next year (they have the Memphis pick as long as it's not the #1 pick) - but I've quickly changed my mind in the last month or so. It doesn't seem worth the hassle.

He would have given up playing his senior year of high school had he accepted the a shoe deal. You can't accept gifts at the hs level either in most states.

He's being investigated right now for the hummer.

but i thought the question was.. the endorsement wasnt going to be a gift, because he would be working for it?

I started a thread on this in here a long time ago.. before the lebron craze started
I wish i could find that thread

As long as his mom took out a legitimate loan, I don't see how he could have any exposure here.

Actually in Ohio there are not presently any rules which prohibit scholastic athletes accepting gifts. The OHHSA, (governing body), was said to be taking a look at this scenario more than a few months ago, but nothing substantive has come of it as of yet. Supposedly James' mother, Gloria who does indeed live in Section 8 housing, took out a loan for the Hummer. She, and James, are getting ripped big time by the local media.

Personally I dont see a problem. Sure, it's not the wisest move and may set a bad precedence, but everyone else is already cashing in on this kid.

Good point - his signed SI cover still gets like $100 on eBay (I give him credit for saying he would no longer sign them for people). And no one is probably happier today than the people who sold him the Hummer, free publicity!

I read an article a while back where one of the higher ups in the OHHSA said that if James signed a shoe deal they would rule him ineligible. I don't remember what the specfics were or if they changed their minds as of now.
