Dec. 27, Houston, Independence, & Holiday Bowls

Houston Bowl: 1 PM EST

Oklahoma State

Vs.

Southern Mississippi

What will happen: It's hard to see this as a shootout in any way. The Southern Miss D is too strong, while the offense doesn't have the pop to put too many points up on the board. If OSU isn't self-satisfied after the Oklahoma win and takes this game seriously, it should come away with the win in relatively easy fashion. If the Cowboys come in unfocused, they'll be in for a rude awakening. Derrick Nix has to play to keep this close, but OSU will win either way

Independence Bowl: 4:30 PM EST

Nebraska

Vs.

Ole Miss

What will happen: Unless Manning has his best game of the year and throws for 300+ yards and at least three touchdowns; Nebraska will pull this off. The Husker ground game will do what it needs to do on the Rebel defense, while the special teams will make at least one big play to turn the course of the game. If Ole Miss could run the ball at all, things might be different. It can't so Nebraska will end the season on a high note.
CFN Prediction: Nebraska 24 ... Ole Miss 17

Holiday Bowl, 8 PM EST

Arizona State

Vs.

Kansas State

What will happen: This has the potential to be ugly if you believe in the common opponent theory. Nebraska beat Arizona State 48-10. Kansas State beat Nebraska 49-13. USC beat Arizona State34-13. Kansas State beat USC 27-20. Kansas State might not feel like Arizona State is a worthy opponent, and there'll be problems if it lets down. Arizona State will be looking to make a statement believing it can actually beat the Wildcats, but it's not going to happen.
CFN Prediction: Kansas State 42 ... Arizona State 17

Wonder why they don't call the Houston Bowl the Bluebonnet Blue.

Mainstay Independence Bowl? That sucks. I miss the days of the Poulan Weed Eater Independence Bowl.

I miss the name "Bluebonnet Bowl", but it's better than the galleryfurniture.com bowl.

This is a day that the Big 12 should go undefeated, but probably will not.

And those rat bastards at the Holiday and Independence bowls can bite me for taking two lesser teams. The Independence selected Nebraska because they thought they had a cash cow, but the last I heard Nebraska had sold less than 3000 tickets.

Yeah - this is poor foresight on the part of the suits in Shreveport (are there people who wear suits in Shreveport?). Why would they think Nebraska fans would shell out money for such a trip when they are accustomed to going to places like Miami and Tempe for New Years. Nebraska fans would view this type of bowl as beneath them.

I used to love the barrage of Poulan commercials ... best bowl name ever.

As for today's games, I didn't realize it until TDD mentioned it, but I have the Big-12 running the table. I feel really uncomfortable taking Kansas State at 17.5, but they should win by 50+ if they play hard the whole game. Not too thrilled about taking Nebraska either, as Manning can play a great game, but I'm betting he won't or won't get enough help.

Uh oh ... Southern Miss may be losing, but they're playing like they want this game more.

well.. smu had a chance only down 7 and had osu pinned back at their own 2 yd line.. but that 88 yard run kindof killed that and the fg pretty much clinched the game

God knows why SMU punted at the end there, but it helped me cover the 7 pt spread I had on OSU. I'm happily 7-1 with point-spreads now ... should have bet more money.

Announcer, following the Nebraska field goal: "Nebraska DOES NOT LOSE FOOTBALL GAMES!"

True. Except for football games against Penn State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas State, and Colorado.

.....and Mississippi.

Nice job of blowing it, Nebraska. You blew it for the Big 12 against a mediocre SEC team, in a game that you had no right to be in in the first place. Well, at least you sold out the.....oh, wait....you didn't do that either.

Way to represent

Good game from Ole Miss, but an absolutely pathetic performance by Nebraska's O-Line in the second half. Their defense has been a bunch of pansies all season, but today their offensive line showed that they too can play like a bunch of wusses. Although my money went the other way, it's always good to see Nebraska look bad on national television.
