Yao is going to the All Star game. Is it fair?

Yao ming will probably be a starter on the All Star team. With 2 Billion people in China rooting him on, he is already the most popular player in the NBA. As All Star starters are based on the voting public (and with nba.com having a link in chinese for those fans to vote), it seems that Yao will beat out Shaq for the starting spot. My question is, has a rookie ever started an All Star game and is this fair? (ps, i voted for Yao too for kicks)

I know he's a beast. I love his game. I love Stevie Franchise as well. That's besides the point. I'm wondering if the general populace in the USA will be pissed if Yao is named starter undeservingly (yes undeservingly as Shaq is clearly superior at this moment).

Yes Shaq is FAR superior. I think namja said it best about the situation as it stands. So does this bother any of you guys? I just think its funny.

no all star game results have been fair since they went to the popularity contest way to pick.

Those stats are misleading since for the first few games, Yao was only playing 10-15 minutes a game. But yes, Shaq deserves to be the starter, simply because he is the most dominant. As for Yao being a reserve, it would be fair because he is the second best center in the West (Duncan is considered a PF).

How can a player from a .391 team be an all-star starter? What's next, a Texas Ranger being MVP?

I have no problem with Yao starting.

Why not? I'm sure the NBA made a **** loads of cash off this guy so far and we're not even in mid season yet.
NBA doctrine = go where the money is

Well, Shaq has been hurt a lot...

Still though, Shaq should start. He is one of the top 10 dominant players of all time, and he is having a great year so far.

Yao can score 2 points a game or 25 points in a game. I don't know if they've played yet, but when they do, it will probably be one of Yao's 2 point games.

Is it fair? Yes. Because the NBA set up the starters for the game to be determined by fan voting. The Chinese people are doing nothing wrong, they just have 2 billion people that can vote for Yao. Does he deserve to be the starter? Probably not. Shaq is the most dominant center right now.

Doesn't bother me. The all star selection is based on fan popularity, rather than merit.

Going by merit, he doesn't deserve to start. He does deserve to be a reserve though. The center position is weak as hell in the NBA. Case in point, the best the Blazers could do was talk Sabonis into coming back. Not that Sabonis isn't good, but he's way past his prime.

It's not as if Yao Ming is going to take away Shaq's roster spot. Shaq will still make the team.

are you sure its the chinese people voting for him? i don't think there's that many people w/ PCs & internet connection over there. at least not enough to vault Yao to #1 in voting.

there's a lot of interest in the guy right now, so maybe people here are voting...

If Shaq was smart, he will sit out like he did last year..
but then again, Shaq and "smart" don't belong in the same sentence...

Go Lakers!

You had me at "If Shaq was smart..."

Does anyone have any doubt that Shaq won't 'reaggravate' his foot injury one week before the All-Star Break???

That's what Tim Duncan thought before Yao Ming took him apart. Same goes for Shawn Bradley. I know they aren't Shaq but you got to put the Duncan/Robinson combo up there with him as to the challenge level for Yao.

Oh and Chinese people have internet. Actually 27 million of them have access to it. Plus if they do kiosk balloting (as sprite did in movie theatres last year in America), this number could be much, much higher.
