Raiders and Chargers

This Sunday, Qualcomm Stadium. 1:00pm PST.

It's going to be EPIC. The battle of the 1st place AFC west teams.

The funny thing is the stuff happening here in preparation for it.

1. Many additional police patrolling the area and at the stadium.
2. Increased private security guards.
3. 50% more holding tanks.
4. Cut off all alcohol sales at halftime.
5. All spectators will be frisked on entering the stadium.

It will be great. If the good Chargers show up. Not that Charger team that tanked against Miami, Jets, and the 1st Denver game. The team that beat San Francisco, Denver (last week), and the 1st meeting with the Raiders. The lucky team with a great running back.

They have some key injuries and areas that they are hurting. Kick offs have been a problem. They released their kicker Wade Richey this week and signed a new guy. A bit late in the season to do that, but I hope he catches on quickly. Then again, he is just a kicker.

The loss last week of Defensive Tackle Jamal Williams to that cheap shot from Denver will hurt. It is not certain if the receiving corp will be healthy enough. Curtis Conway is hurt, and he was the go-to guy early on this season. If Tim Dwight can be used more, that would be a good thing. He is incredible.

Our QB is doing a good job, and he has flashes of brilliance. But he is new at this, and learning and has made some mistakes. To his credit, the mistakes have been pretty few. But if they stop LT and the running game, and force the QB to throw a lot, we will be in trouble.

On the other side, Gannon is having a career year. Setting all kinds of records. Jerry Rice is awesome.

This could be a great game of playoff proportions. Or a stinker.

Another great game will be December 22 when the Raiders play the Broncos....or maybe even the KC game on Dec 28th.

The AFC West is a real shoot out this season.

When is the AFC West not a shootout?

Both these teams are playing really well right now, and it should be a close game. I see it going down to the wire...

I'm not surprised at all. Raiders games at the Q have picked up a scary reputation. Last year (I think-if not the year before) one of the newscasts showed footage of someone getting stabbed while fighting in the stands during the game. A few years back there was a thirty person or so brawl in the stands. So now they just prepare for a surplus of drunken fans looking to fight when the Raiders come to town.

AJP, that stabbing was 2 years ago.

I went to the game last year and it was nuts, but just small fights. HUGE lines to get in, took almost an hour to get through. Kind of scary and intimidating being surrounded by 6' 6" 275 pound Raiders fans b/c if you piss them off, you really have to worry that you'll end up in the hospital.

Not sure if I'll get my hands on tickets this year or not.

Even if the Raiders beat my team last week (Jets), they're still my second favorite team. And yeah they'll beat the Chargers.

This is going to be a great game! I really hope that Chargers fans show up and don't sell their tickets to Raider fans. Sadly I think it'll be 50-50. This year the Chargers required fans to buy tickets to 2 other games in addition to the Raider game. If I were going to the game I think I would go stone cold sober. I went to one a few years ago and everytime I left my seat to get a drink or use the bathroom I got pushed and shoved because I was wearing a Chargers jersey. Who's homefield is this? The Chargers D really need to stop Gannon.

Didn't you know that EVERY field belongs to the Raiders?

As long as the Chargers don't fall behind too quickly and are able to control the game with Martyball, I think they'll come out on top.

If they get behind too quickly, the Raider offense is just too potent and the Chargers will end up losing.

So it'll either be a blowout win for the Raiders, or a close win for the Chargers.

GO BOLTS!

[edit]
A funny thing about the Chargers. Last year, despite going 5-11, they scored more points than they gave up. This year, they are 8-4 and have given up more points than they've scored. They're winning the close games this year (and getting blown out when they lose) and last year, they lose the close ones, and blew out doormats early in the season.

I much prefer when they pull out the close ones.

Thanks Dark Elf, I just couldn't remember exactly when that happened.

I haven't been to a Raiders game in such a long time that the Q was still called Jack Murphy Stadium and John Friesz was the Chargers QB. It wasn't anything like that back then and it's just wrong that it's come to this now. People I know actually won't wear their Chargers stuff because they feel it might invite trouble just like 37 in a row mentioned in his post above.

A strange home game, isn't it?

Go Bolts!

GAMEDAY!! A day that will live in infamy.

First interesting thing. What percentage of fans will be Chargers fans vs the Raiders fans. It's big news here. The Chargers organization has implemented some things to try to get more of a fan base. In previous years, we had around 60% Raiders fans in the stands.

Many Chargers seasons ticket holders sell the tickets. Either because of the high prices they can get, or in many cases, because a typical Chargers-Raiders game has a lot of drunks, gangs, violence, etc. So they sell off the tickets and we get more Raiders fans and the cycle repeats.

There will still be a high Raiders presence.

There will be a sea of black in the stands. I bet tomorrow it there will be 2.5 raider fans for every charger fan.
