Talk about your East Coast bias... where are the West Coast rivalries?

The Big Game between Cal and Stanford's been going since 1892, the oldest on the West Coast. After over 100 games against each other, the teams are separated by only like 100 points.

So much tradition and strange games. Weird stories about the Axe being stolen all the time. And you can't forget The Play the greatest, most exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football, when Cal beat John Elway and Stanford on a 5-lateral kickoff return as time expired, running into the band at the end.

And what about the other West coast teams? UCLA vs USC?

WVU-Pitt.

The Backyard Brawl.

Nothing beats the deafening chant of "Eat Sh*t Pitt" when the game's in Morgantown.

In history or currently?

In terms of history, probably Army/Navy.

Where nothing is more important to the coach/players than THAT game, Harvard/Yale.

The game cared about by more people that never even graduated high school, let alone college, the Inbreed Iron Bowl.

Overall (longevity, hatred, national championship implications, quality games), Michigan/Ohio State.

nope.. but i would consider the fsu/florida matchup a bigger rivalry then miami/fsu

or maybe you can just lump the three teams into a 3 way rivalry

Yeah. Florida/Florida State is a bigger rivalry, and even it's not Top 5 worthy.

The twikoff-cwikoff match gets pretty steamy as well. In that one, you can always bet that twikoff will get plenty of penetration on the tight end and cwikoff will be getting in some big licks on the sack.

UGA-Auburn. It's the oldest rivalry in the deep south (I'm not sure which national game is older), and the 8th-most played in Division I, dating back to 1892.

(I also think Georgia-Florida is a great rivalry, especially with its "world's largest outdoor cocktail party" thing. However, I don't think many Florida fans think it's a rivalry since they generally beat Georgia's butt!! Actually, they've won 45 and Georgia's won 33.)

oldest rivalry and most played rivalry in the deep south.. true

biggest rivalry for auburn fans.. false

the uga isnt much more then another sec game for most of us.. the bama game is the most important game on our schedule, every year..

wouldnt the uga/ga tech be a bigger rivalry for uga?
hard for an out of state rivalry to every compete with an instate rivalry

I'm going for historical, you're not. I don't think it's a fun rivalry, but history should count for something. I know plenty of Auburn fans/alums that think this is huge rivalry.

As for Georgia Tech? Maybe. But I don't know many Georgia fans that wait in anticipation for that game like they do for UT or UF. I don't think being in-state has anything to do with it. (The OP may agree, since 5 of the 8 are inter-state rivalries.)

Notre Dame - USC would and should be my pick.

But before I became a USC fan/student/graduate.....I was a die-hard Notre Dame fan. I cheer for whoever has more on the line for there season in that game (which in the past few years has been neither!)

Georgia downplays the Georgia Tech rivalry, but when the games matter it gets big ... and ugly.

Anyway, I thought the question was the best rivalry in football, not personal favorites? I'm a Notre Dame fan and a Georgia Tech grad, both historically great programs with some strong rivalries, but neither is on my list.

But Georgia's just out of luck on this one. They're not Auburn's biggest game. They're not Florida's biggest game. And they don't consider Tech to be their biggest game. Hard to claim the greatest rivalry in all of college football when one of the two teams doesn't care that much.

As I stated above, Georgia-hater (), I don't think Auburn-Georgia is a huge game so it's obviously not a "personal favorite". I just think the history dictates that it's a big rivalry.

There's no factual basis to any of this, so for you or anyone else to tell me my opinion is "wrong", and for me to tell you you're wrong, gets all of us nowhere fast.

If you can show me a clear-cut mathematical equation to get to the "best rivalry in football", then a poll is worthless in the first place. Clearly this IS a question of personal favorites.

I guess if the world revolves around you. I'm speaking to the thread as a whole (evidenced by my not quoting you); the posts seem to indicate the game that gets the individual pumped, not the best rivalry.

And I never said your opinion is "wrong." You just made that up. Quotation marks are used to quote people ... funny how that works.

And the poll is not worthless. There is no clear cut best rivalry in football. But there is a difference between the opinion of best rivalry and personal favorite rivalry. You'd see that if you weren't just arguing with me because you know I hate Georgia.

Quatation marks are also used to emphasize a word. If I say, Bill has a somewhat "loose" girlfriend, I'm putting the word "loose" in quotes to denote emphasis or a manner of speaking. Not all quotations are used for quoting material. Funny how that works.

This is fun!

I think also the Michigan-Michigan State game is a big rivalry.
