University of Colorado gets 2 years probation

http://msn.espn.go.com/ncf/news/2002/1008/1443020.html

BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado's football team was placed on two years' probation by the NCAA on Tuesday for recruiting violations, most of which occurred under former coach Rick Neuheisel.

The NCAA cut the school's football scholarships and accepted Colorado's self-imposed recruiting limits, including reducing the number of visits by recruits.

Neuheisel, now head coach at Washington, was barred from off-campus recruiting for the Huskies until May 31. In Seattle, UW athletics spokesman Jim Daves had no immediate comment, but said the Huskies planned to issue a statement.

Colorado was not banned from television or bowl appearances but must reduce the number of new scholarships it offers from 25 to 20 in either the 2003-04 or 2004-05 academic year.
sounds like they got off pretty easy..

seems like basically the ncaa committee pretty much just accepted colorado's self imposed penalties

maybe colorado cooperated more in the investigation?

Actually, I think Colorado performed the investigation in-house and then turned the results into the NCAA. Stupid Rick Neuheisel, I couldn't stand him when he was there and he basically just gets a slap on the wrist while CU loses scholarships, he's probably laughing his ass off.

This stinks, five scholarships doesn't seem like much, but nowadays it is, oh wait, nevermind, ncaa football teams have like 900 players on their roster, what's five going to do? at least they still have Chris Brown...hopefully they will continue to get better and beat Nebraska's ass again this year.

First of all, I'm a CU student and I have to say this is pretty bogus. The probation should've follow with Rick Neuheisel to Washinton State instead of stay here with CU. All that stuipd violation happended while Rick was here and he's just a bad coach didn't do anything about it.

Second, CU did do an in-house investigation but along with investigation from NCAA. So the getting only probation is not because CU cover anything up or so called self imposed penalties. It came strictly from NCAA.

Third, AMEN BAHIST17, CU will beat Nebraska this year. The Huskies are even worst this year than last and we just got a better QB. I'm sure we'll beat them easily.....

Possibly... Cal also self-imposed a scholarship reduction penalty and removed the professor who committed the academic fraud for its violations, but the NCAA decided it wasn't harsh enough and then banned us from a bowl this year too.

Why is that? Washington didn't benefit from the recruiting violations, if anyone did, it was Colorado. Maybe Neuheisel should be fined, but UW didn't have anything at all to do with this except for hiring, so the fact they are being punished at all is kind of bogus.

I think you misunderstand me. The probation should follow with Rick Neuheisel to Washinton State, but I didn't mean that Washinton State should be punished. But that the punishment should be impose on Rick for his irresponsibility.

"Neuheisel, now head coach at Washington, was barred from off-campus recruiting for the Huskies until May 31."

"Other alleged violations included letting recruits keep apparel, improper use of private aircraft and excessive compensation to recruits ranging from $3.20 to $36.76."

I have hosted recruits (for other sports) who where on campus visits and there where tons of rules I had to follow. They allow you to spend $60 per weekend to entertain each recruit plus they will re-emburse the host for one meal a day. However they told me explicitly not to go someplace and buy them a shirt or anything they can take home. Say if we went to the mall and I got an A&M hat with the money and they took it home there would be hell to pay. NCAA is all over that kind of stuff its crazy.
