15,000 tickets bought by mysterious buyer prior to last Marlins game...

...to make sure Expos finish last in attendance.

How lame is that! Oh geez... I wonder who that mysterious buyer was... Hmmm... wait... $10 it's former Expos owner, now Marlins owner Jeffry Loria...

The only ticket he'll be buying is a bus ticket to the homeless shelter. It's D.PhilingResume now.

Wow, that's interesting. How much are the tickets?

How would that count as attendance? Did the buyer give them out free?

As long as the tickets are sold, they count towards attendance.

I don't think this is true. Many M's games have been sold out, but the official attendance of these games varies within a few thousand. Many times businesses will buy huge blocks of tickets and then nobody uses them, etc.

yes, it is true. MLB changed the way they counted attendance a few years ago. It used to be "true" attendance in the park, but now it's tickets sold. Even if there are 5,000 empty seats, but they were sold, it's a sellout.

Then in theory every sellout should have the same attendance within the same stadium...?

Perhaps the numbers I've seen aren't official "MLB" numbers. See ESPN.com as an example. I guess it makes sense to keep track of both tickets sold and actual attendance... some places just may report them differently as "attendance."

I'm currently taking up a collection to harm Jeff Loria in any way. I don't care.

It's hard being a Marlins fan. It really is. I HATE Jeff Loria. He makes Wayne Huizenga look like a benevolent owner (well, Huizenga's just as big an ass, but he did win us a World Series, so that gives him a few points).

But I'm sure, as a Expos fan, you know the feeling eXcentris.

In practice, every sellout has a different attendance figure.

Stadiums oversell--sell more tickets than the stadium capacity. I'm not sure exactly how (maybe Standing Room Only?) but stadiums always oversell. Once the number of tickets sold reaches "official capacity", the game is deemed sold out.

Pac Bell Park in San Francisco lists has a capacity of 40,800 (according to ESPN and CNNSI). Ballparks.com lists the capacity as 41,059. Anyway, the last three games against Houston were all "sold-out" and the attendance at those games were:

41,385 and 41,045 and 40,944

You bet! How baseball allowed that lunatic to drive one franchise into the ground and then let him buy another one so he could do it all over again is beyond me. Oh wait, it's Bud Selig we're talking about...
