I don't play computer games much but I am interested in getting this one. Can anyone tell me if it is joystick compatible? I have a MS Sidewinder. THKS if anyone can help.

An FPS is not the type of game you'd even WANT to play with a joystick. Definitely mouse/keyboard territory.

Why not I am not very keyboard coordinated and I used to play Quake and Doom with a J/S all the time while my punk arse roommie could play and beat any game with a keyboard

Y'all are a bit out of the loop. Modern FPS' are unplayable without the ability to freelook. Spend 5 minutes on a Q3A server without touching the mouse and you'll see what I mean.

Games have evolved to allow much greater vertical range of movement (DOOM had 2d maps, after all), and level design reflects that.

Um, he did say he had played Quake with a joystick, so he's had some experience there.

you should probably just go by the company's site and see if they have any info on it. http://www.ravensoft.com/soldier has some info, a FAQ, etc. you could always email them and ask if you're still not sure.

I agree that it's a bit crazy to try using a Sidewinder with a modern FPS. However, there are other joysticks out there that might work well:

This one features dual analog sticks like on the Playstation controller. When you think about it, that's a pretty good and cheap approximation of keyboard and mouse combo (thought I don't know if it actually allows u to map the controls thusly ):

And this one seems made for FPS:

I believe I've seen another which is a joystick/trackball combo that is specifically for FPS games, but I don't know who makes it.

Of course, for most there's no need to spend the money when the mouse & keyboard will do the job beautifully.

SOF answer

There is a controller that actually works at least as well as keyboard, mouse. It's called the panther XL made by madcatz. They also have the panther for dreamcast and playstation 2. You can only find them online now because madcatz is making anew one with a keyboard emulator and better support. The joystick is huge witha solid base and a trackball attached to the left. It has 17 programable buttons. SOF is supported along with all unreal, Quake, Quake2, ans Quake3 titles. People who awear by the mouse keyboard combo have never tried the panther. It's killer but wait for the pro due in june.

I've seen the DC version in stores (if you're referring to the original).
