The Madison (Paramount+) -- S: Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer -- EP: Taylor Sheridan -- 3/14/26

THE MADISON is Sheridan's most intimate work to date, unfolding across two distinct worlds - the beautiful landscape of Montana and the vibrant energy of Manhattan - as it examines the ties that bind families together.
Introducing the Clyburns, THE MADISON is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.
In addition to Pfeiffer and Russell, the series stars Beau Garrett (Firefly Lane), Elle Chapman (A Man Called Otto), Patrick J. Adams (Suits), Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes), Alaina Pollack (The Surrender), Ben Schnetzer (3 Body Problem), Kevin Zegers (Power), Rebecca Spence (Lady in the Lake), Danielle Vasinova (1923), Matthew Fox (Lost) and Will Arnett (Is This Thing On?).

Kurt Russell was interviewed yesterday by CBS News about this show. He said that a lot of scenes with him and Michelle were digital inserts and were shot a year apart. The reason was he was working on Monatch in Australia and couldn’t fly back and forth. So he shot 2 seasons of content for this show and then went to Australia.

Yeah, that is interesting but I have watched multiple appearances of Kurt Russell on the late night and morning talk shows and he hinted that they had to make some serious accommodations to his schedule to make this work (seeing as how he is also on this little show called Monarch), and he says that Michelle is fantastic in this show so he clearly likes how the final edits of the episodes turned out.
Another reminder of how much easier it is with modern film editing tech to have two or more actors look like they were bouncing lines off of each other in a scene in a film/show but the reality is that they may have only shared the stage, so to speak, on a small handful of occasions (or even not at all). I know that sometimes the actors in MCU films when doing press let slip that what looks like an awesome group scene in the film what stitched together over many months. Downey might be doing his scene one month, then Scarlett comes in to perform her scene a month later, and in the film it looks like the two of them were both on set at the same time.
I know that lots of music collabs over the decades have happened where sometimes the two artists in a song do not have a chance to meet each other in person until long after the song has been released, one musician in a Hollywood Music Studio does his/her thing, another in say, Australia does their thing, then tech smooshes the two vocals together into something that oftentimes sounds so wonderful that is is amazing both artists were not in the same studio together.
Anyway, this long-winded post is my way of saying that know a bit of how the sausage was made has not made me any less interested in checking out this show.
I am curious and it has a heck of a cast. The cast is the main draw for me, as I am not someone who watches a show because it is a Taylor Sheridan production (only watched a very small handful of Yellowstone eps, none of the spin-offs, and just a few episodes of Landman, never watched Mayor of Kingstown, or Tulsa King).

I think it's pretty weird that Taylor Sheridan lost his biggest star for his biggest show, in part to scheduling conflicts and than he casts Kurt Russell knowing that there will be issues with scheduling. Why not just cast Dennis Quaid, Richard Gere, Michael Keaton or any other actor the that era?
Don't get me wrong. Kurt Russell is one of my favorite actors and I'm happy that he's doing something else than those horrible Christmas Chronicles, but casting him for a show, he can barely get on to his schedule seems wrong.

Since I've watched the episode 1-3, it puts my last comment into perspective.
The show has a different angle than most of Sheridan's shows, since it doesn't revolve around a business or profession. It's a family drama and a fish out of water story, but most of the characters don't even have a job. I'm not quite sure in which direction the show is heading since everything is happening in two or three days and I wouldn't think that a lot of time will pass in the rest of the season, so it's just the move from a New York family to Montana. There is no antagonist, not even a real obstacle to overcome. It just is missing something. Michelle Pfeiffer is chewing the scenary, the dialogues are definetly written or approved by Sheridan handing out simple life lessons and giving the finger to the east coast elites, but the true star is the landscape.
I've watched the show on a 100" screen and it is just beautiful, nothing we haven't seen on Yellowstone or 1923, but it is always stunning.

I was thinking of showing this to my parents thinking it would be like a Hallmark drama but it is MA with profanity so skip that.

In episode 4 they teased a little bit, but it wasn't the same. My assessement doesn't change after 6 episodes. The show is missing some kind of adversary. It's just a story about grief and a family dealing with it. Michelle Pfeiffer has some really great moments and she's definitely a Taylor Sheridan character. She gets things done, she knows better than anybody and the show tries to show her as being right on every subject, even is she isn't. It's pretty much like Landman in this regard. The first season tells a story over the course of a few days, so there is not much time for character development.

It's been a while since I watched this season, so maybe I've forgotten something, but their cabin just bugged me. It's got this wood stove that they have to use to prepare food and make coffee, so they're "roughing it." And there are no electric outlets so they can't charge their phones or watch TV, etc. Yet there are electric lights, and there is a refrigerator. So there's at least one electric outlet. Therefore a simple power strip would allow them to plug in more electrical stuff. So the showrunners are just manipulating the situation to have the best of both worlds, the rustic nature of the wilderness but lights and refrigerated food.
And don't get me started on the toilet situation. The reason they don't have indoor plumbing is because the cabin is too close to the river and a septic tank would leak into the river. Yet they build an outhouse close to the river with a big hole under it (where the wasps live) to capture what goes in there. And that doesn't leak into the river???? Plus, have these people never heard of chemical toilets? They could have indoor facilities if they wanted to. Again, showrunners decision, not what a practical person who lived there (and has enough money) would do.

The Madison is the idea of a macho cowboy and what he thinks, women would find romantic. It's a Hallmark movie in the world of Taylor Sheridan.
