I have no idea how I am not heavy into the Dead, as they are one of the few enduring bands from that era I don't listen to. I have tremendous respect for the band and its culture, and its impact on the music scene. Sad to see another one gone.

The Dead have been widely praised for their impact on the culture, the music scene. But one of the most under-appreciated things about the Dead is their influence on rock music, period. They were always so "niche" that most people don't see it, but the way they played, the idea of improvisation through the entirety of a song and not just "the solo", was extremely unique in rock (jazz, of course, but not rock). And Bobby? The most unconventional rhythm guitarist ever. A rhythm guitarist is supposed to play, well, rhythm, but he didn't. He always said he wanted to play like McCoy Tyner played piano. I mean, listen to this, Bobby's isolated guitar for a whole concert:
There are parts of that, in the "meat" of a song where the rhythm guitarist should be playing straightforward rhythm, and he isn't. But the whole thing works. His musical impact is so underrated because he wasn't "Jerry".
