Most of these were not on my radar but I’m intrigued! Started listening to Smerz while making this post and I’m enjoying this duo from Norway.

I don't listen to enough new music to make even a top ten list each year but I do take every opportunity I can to try and steer people towards Little Simz whose 2025 album Lotus is very strong.

I'm sorry, but this list in null and void without Lily Allen's "West End Girl".

They trash it in the first sentence of the linked article but no ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ invalidates the whole list for me.

It's wild how out of touch I've become with new music. There are only 6 artists on that list whose names I recognize and I couldn't name a single song from any of them. Starting at age 16, I bought 2-3 albums a week for 20-some years, kept up with new artists and releases, attended a couple dozen concerts each year, would make annual best-of lists, etc. Then I had kids and for some reason, as much as I enjoy music, it was the hobby that suffered the most from my reduced free time.

I mean that's kind of an odd take. It's a music magazine, she was the biggest star in music for a while. Why wouldn't she make a cover? It's not like they picked her album as the best of the year. It's a little like saying I stopped reading Time when they put President Trump on the cover. You might not like the news, but it's still the news.

Name a top-selling pop superstar from that era who didn't make a cover because their music sucked? Maybe a one-hit wonder didn't but any pop or disco superstar did.

Rolling Stone became more fluff and less relevant in the 90's. I haven't looked at one since.
