2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

2026 Grammy nominations are led by Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar's reign continues: The Los Angeles rapper has received nine Grammy nominations for the 2026 awards, following a triumphant sweep earlier this year in which he took home more golden Gramophones than any other artist — including record of the year and song of the year for his mic-dropping "Not Like Us." On Friday, Lamar received nods in three major categories. He could repeat in record of the year and song of the year and add album of the year to his trophy case in 2026, with potential wins in the rap and pop duo/group performance categories, too.

The bulk of Lamar's nominations are for his
record-breaking album GNX and the single "Luther (feat. SZA)," both of which topped multiple Billboard charts. Beyond his own album and singles, the Recording Academy also recognized the rapper for additional collaborations with SZA and Clipse. At this time last year, Lamar was in the midst of a remarkable run that culminated in his Super Bowl halftime performance, multiple Grammy wins and a victory in his rap beef with Drake by unanimous decision.

At the 68th annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented at a ceremony on February 1, 2026 in Los Angeles, competition for the top awards will also include
Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter and Bad Bunny. Gaga trails behind Lamar with seven nominations, including best pop solo performance ("Disease") and best pop vocal album (MAYHEM). Canadian record producer Cirkut, who co-produced Gaga's album, also has seven nominations, as does Jack Antonoff, who's recognized for his work with Lamar and Carpenter. Bad Bunny has six nominations. So does the breakout star of last year's Grammys — Carpenter — and the newcomer with most nominations this year, including best new artist — Leon Thomas.

The 32-year-old Thomas — who
just landed his first Top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 chart this week — is in the running for several R&B categories (including for a song recorded during his NPR Tiny Desk concert), as well as album of the year (MUTT). Joining Thomas among the nominees for best new artist are girl group KATSEYE, soul-pop singer Olivia Dean (who also cracked the Top 10 this week), indie-pop band The Marías, English singer Lola Young, Gen-Z rocker sombr and two TikTok creators turned pop stars: Alex Warren and Addison Rae.

In the rap categories, the Recording Academy embraced the highly-touted
return of the duo Clipse, following a 16-year hiatus. The Thornton brothers, a.k.a. Malice and Pusha T, received five nominations for their album Let God Sort Em Out. Doechii, who delivered one of last year's most electric Grammys performances, also received five nominations for her single "Anxiety." (Although the song originally came out in 2019, the Swamp Princess re-recorded and re-released "Anxiety" this year after it went viral on TikTok). Tyler, the Creator — who has publicly called out the Academy for how it categorizes rap — is once again nominated for best rap album (CHROMAKOPIA) and best rap song ("Sticky feat. GloRilla, Lil Wayne, Sexyy Red"). He's also up for best alternative album (DON'T TAP THE GLASS), album of the year (CHROMAKOPIA) and best album cover (CHROMAKOPIA).

The 68th annual Grammy Awards will feature 95 categories total, highlighting a multitude of genres as well as behind-the-scenes figures like songwriters and producers. This year, the Recording Academy will introduce two new categories. The first is for best album cover. Nominees include Bad Bunny (
DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS), alt-rocker Djo (The Crux) and the English band Wet Leg (moisturizer). The second debuting category is for best traditional country album. The first nominees include father and son Willie Nelson (Oh What A Beautiful World) and Lukas Nelson (American Romance), as well as Zach Top (Ain't In It For My Health), Charley Crockett (Dollar A Day) and Margo Price (Hard Headed Woman).Read the complete list of nominees below:

Re: 2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

Here are the five album covers competing for the first Grammy in the new category of Best Album Cover :

CHROMAKOPIA — Shaun Llewellyn & Luis "Panch" Perez, art directors (Tyler, The Creator)

With a catalog of striking, often colorful album covers, Tyler, The Creator opted to appear in sepia on the cover of his eighth studio set, CHROMAKOPIA. The stark portrait depicts the two-time GRAMMY-winning rapper wearing a ceramic mask of his own face, his right hand outstretched toward whomever is behind the camera.

The mask plays several purposes on the cover, mainly to introduce fans to St. Chroma, Tyler's latest alter ego (who bears a marked similarity to Chroma the Great from Norton Juster's classic children's book The Phantom Toolbooth), and tap into the album's themes of identity, authenticity and the divide between public persona and inner self.

According to art director Luis "Panch" Perez, Tyler wanted to channel the film noir of the 1930s and '40s, even bringing a screen test from an unnamed Alfred Hitchcock movie to set as inspiration. "He wanted the cover to feel like it came from a film of that era," Perez revealed in a November 2024 interview with ArtNews.

"It changes how you see Tyler, which was obviously very much a reason why he made it the way he made it," the rapper's longtime visual collaborator added of the eerie cover shot. "It makes the viewer really pay attention to what's going on with him. It makes you want to go, 'Wait, what's going on here? I'm unsettled by what I'm seeing.'"

The Crux — William Wesley II, art director (Djo)

The Crux, the third album by Joe Keery under his musical alias Djo, is bound by a tangible sense of place. Namely, the hotel of its title, which is filled with guests facing various crossroads of one kind or another in their lives.

Shot on the famed Paramount Pictures studio lot in Los Angeles, the album's cover — which was overseen by art director William Wesley II — brings the fictional Crux Hotel to life, as it teems with guests appearing in the windows of their rooms and passersby rushing to and fro below the building's old-fashioned neon sign. As a small airplane hauls a banner declaring, "I'M SORRY CINDY AND I LOVE YOU" across the top of the frame, Djo himself hangs precipitously from one of the hotel's second-story windows, clad in a white, '70s-style suit.

In a January appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," Keery revealed some of the inspiration behind the lively, Easter egg-packed cover art. "I've done stuff that's kind of minimalistic before and I just wanted a maximal cover … A theme of the record is 'one of many,' so just having a lot going on and a lot to look at," he
before pointing out the miniscule mouse dressed as the bellman that was included in the shoot "just for me."

Debí Tirar Más Fotos — Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, art director (Bad Bunny)

Bad Bunny's 2025 album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, is notable for being the lone cover in this year's pack of nominated albums devoid of any human subject. Instead, the three-time GRAMMY winner — who art directed the cover himself — chose an image of two plastic Monobloc chairs in front of a banana tree to represent the love letter to his native Puerto Rico.

The cover of DtMF, which translates in English to I Should Have Taken More Photos, beautifully captures the essence and natural beauty of Bad Bunny's homeland, where he spent the better part of the summer and early fall performing his sold-out residency at San Juan's José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum.

The image is also punctuated by a palpable sense of longing created by the empty chairs in the foreground, which many fans speculated were a veiled reference to the rapper's past relationship to girlfriend Gabriela Berlingeri, with whom he split in 2022. While Bad Bunny has never publicly confirmed any connection between the cover art and his personal life, the back cover of the album includes a heartfelt dedication to his culture and community in his own words: "This project is dedicated to all Puerto Ricans around the world."

Glory — Cody Critcheloe & Andrew J.S., art directors (Perfume Genius)

Over the course of his career, Perfume Genius has appeared as a near-statuesque figure on many of his album covers, from the polished portraiture of 2014's Too Bright and shirtless still that graces the cover of 2020's Set My Heart on Fire Immediately to the painterly rendering of 2022's Ugly Season.

In the imagery for 2025's Glory, the art-pop auteur born Mike Hadreas is shown toppled over, sprawled on the floor of a wood-paneled home with his legs askew and midriff bare as a bevy of extension cords run beneath his body. In a conversation with Wallpaper upon Glory's release, Perfume Genius delved into the creative process behind the unnerving suburban scene, which was directed by his longtime collaborators Cody Critcheloe and Andrew J.S.

"I like how it looks: it could be a dance, or it could be that I'm sick, and there's something wrong with me. That was the thing that felt riskiest about that photoshoot, it could go any way," he told the outlet. "When we got the pictures back, it felt like a snapshot, almost like a still from a movie … It feels like the music, in that it's earnest and personal, but with absurdity and dramatics, and performance."

moisturizer — Hester Chambers, Ellis Durand, Henry Holmes, Matt de Jong, Jamie-James Medina, Joshua Mobaraki & Rhian Teasdale, art directors (Wet Leg)

Wet Leg's sophomore album, 2025's moisturizer, marks the band's first studio effort as a quintet with guitarist Joshua Mobraki, bassist Ellis Durand and drummer Henry Holmes joining original duo Rihan Teasdale and Hester Chambers as fully contributing members.

That newly evolved group mentality is also reflected in the British rockers' nomination for moisturizer's feral cover art, with all five members credited as art directors alongside Matt de Jong and Jamie-James Medina.

Teasdale and Chambers take center stage in the artwork, however. The frontwoman stares down the camera with a devilish grin, crouched on all fours, while the lead guitarist's back is to the camera, arms wrapped around herself to show off her pointed nails.

"Not just the album cover, but I think, like, the whole energy of the creative is kind of subversive," Teasdale explained to Variety upon the album's release. "Like, if there's any moments on there that are a bit sexy, it's also a bit disgusting. Juxtaposition is something that we've always done … That's something that is always fun to play with."

I know that I'm getting older and don't keep up with pop music at all, but the list of nominees above, with all of the odd capitalization, misspellings, and strange/exotic/foreign names, looks like I opened up my GMail spam folder.

15. Best Metal Performance
● "Night Terror" by Dream Theater
● "Lachryma" by Ghost
● "Emergence" by Sleep Token
● "Soft Spine" by Spiritbox
● "BIRDS" by Turnstile

I'd say the Spiritbox song is the only one in that list that is Metal. I suppose the DT song counts as prog-metal (if there is not prog-rock category).

Even old Turnstite would be borderline metal maybe. Definitely anything from the last album which is very good.

Will the fire marshal allow all of the songwriters on stage at the same time to accept the award for best song?

Clearly a song this brilliant and complex couldn't possibly have been written by less than nine individuals. It's almost three minutes long!

Re: 2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

Reminder : Grammys start in a half hour. Kendrick has been the big winner so far with 3 Rap Grammy wins before the main telecast. The Cure won Best Alternate album (cool), Turnstile won Best Rock Album and Metal Performance, while Nine Inch Nails won Best Rock Song.
Biggest upset so far is Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo winning for Defying Gravity over HUNTR/Xs Golden.

Re: 2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

Pretty disappointing Grammys overall. I did love the Tyler performance, Sabrina and Gaga were up to their usual high standards.
Thought the 7 new artist performances were all pretty awful except for The Marias. I guess Olivia Dean was blandly okay.

The Lauryn Hill tribute to Roberta Flack was absolutely the highlight for me. I have missed her so much. So sad she basically walked away from her career, more or less. Was really glad that she did this and was still terrific. When she called Wycliff Jean up for Killing Me Softly, I let out a loud cheer.

Happy for Bad Bunny. He seemed genuinely moved. Obviously he couldn't perform right before the Super Bowl show, but missing out on both him and Kendrick felt like the Grammys were missing their biggest artists. Didn't need two Bruno Mars performances either.

I love Billie Eilish, but there's no way she should have won Song of the Year for a song that came out in May of 2024 on an album that lost Best Album, Song of the Year and Record of the Year honors in 2025. It's also her FOURTH Song of the Year Grammy win at age 24! It's okay to give that Grammy to someone else now.

Also I was unaware that the Grammys are moving to ABC after 54 years on CBS. That will be a weird change
I won't miss not having Trevor Noah as host though. His schtick is so stale now. "Justin Bieber?! Are you kidding me? Mylie Cyrus??!! Are you kidding me?" Yes, there are going to be music stars at Music's biggest awards. It's not that shocking.

They did have an acknowledgement for Sly Stone along with the Lifetime Achievement inductees (like Cher).
I didn't see any acknowledgement during the telecast for Brian Wilson, though the show did close with credits over 'God Only Knows".

No mention of Bob Weir either.

Re: 2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

Brian Wilson had a video dedicated to him using vintage video and voiceover narration from Bruce Springsteen.
This was the kickoff to all the In Memorial segments.

Bob Weir also had video, narrated by John Mayer.

Not that it matters, but these gals pulled in a couple - Best Folk Album and Best American Roots Song.
Really should've just been Best Album and Best Song, period.

They'll be on Colbert on Wednesday.

I'm sure everyone already knew.
They're hard to miss when reading Roots Magazine, the No Depression Journal and the Americana Music Association social media sites.
That's like being a huge sports fan and not knowing who won the 1919 Dodgeball tournament in Helsinki.

Re: 2026 Grammy Nominations Announced

Fun (literally) bit of trivia: With the Record of the Year Award going to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for "Luther", Jack Antonoff becomes just the 4th person to win all four biggest Grammys in a career, having won Best New Artist with the band "fun", along with Best Song for "We Are Young", and winning three Album of the Year awards with Taylor Swift.

Can you name the other three winners of all four? (Two won all four at once, the other over a couple of albums)
Spoiler:
Christopher Cross in 1981 for his debut album and Song and Record of the year for "Sailing"

Billie Eilish in 2020 for her debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO, with Song and Record of the Year for "Bad Guy". She has won Song of the Year three times since, including yesterday for WILDFLOWER

Adele won Best New Artist in 2009 and then Best Album for 21, and Song and Record of the Year for "Rolling in the Deep in 2012.

Surprisingly it's not
Spoiler:
The Beatles, who won Best New Artist in 1965, Song.of the Year for Michelle in 1967 and Album of the Year for Sgt Pepper a year later. But they never won Record of the Year despite being nominated for I Want To Hold Your Hand in 1965, Hey Jude in 1969, Let It Be in 1970 and, yes, Now And Then in 2025.

I'm curious how much Billie Eilish won by.

Maybe not so much for SOTY, but Pop duo/group
performance might have had a different outcome
if Apt. and Golden weren't competing together...
