The Holiday TV Movies discussion thread (Hallmark, Lifetime, UpTV, GAC, Netflix, Freeform and more)

This thread can cover Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years or whatever.

Netflix just dropped the trailer for their new Christmas movie "A Marry Ex-Mas" that stars Alicia Silverstone, Melissa Joan Hart and Oliver Hudson. Comes out November 12th

I saw an early home test screening for this back in the summer and had to do a survey.

Since the trailer is out, I'm going to say it's pretty terrible. And thankfully it was under 90 minutes.

Edit:

I know you all have gotten so used to that Hallmark Countdown to Christmas thread, but I thought a broader thread that covers more holiday season movies might be better. And more networks and streamers.

I mean after all, Hallmark isn't the only network that televises holiday movies.

Saw a great meme recently:

I watched a Hallmark Christmas film in reverse last night. A girl in an ugly holiday sweater dumps her loser small town boyfriend, and moves to the city for a fabulous job wearing gorgeous shoes and pencil skirts.

We’ve always used that thread for seasonal movies on all channels but whatever

I am so going to enjoy this apparently not very good Netflix film, and I will also be happy to contribute to this thread.

This holiday, payback never looked so festive.
Sophia (Olivia Holt), a sharp-witted retail worker, and Nick (Connor Swindells), a down-on-his-luck repairman, are small-time thieves with their eyes on the same Christmas Eve score: robbing London’s most notorious department store. Forced into an uneasy alliance, as secrets surface and feelings for each other deepen, Sophia and Nick put their relationship and the heist in jeopardy.

Oh wow, I actually totally forgot that I also saw an early screening of that movie as well back months ago in the Spring.

OK, that one I actually liked. It had a lot of charm to it and Breckenridge and Ryan Eggold had some good chemistry. Sure, it was kind of dopey in spots, but it's a nice holiday movie overall. I would recommend checking it out for those here who like holiday movies.

This thread is a great reminder that Netflix fairly recently started to lean into the Holiday season and put up a handful of originals.

Plan to watch both Netflix films mentioned in this thread.

I will certainly have the time, considering I have been able to squeeze in watching 45-50 Holiday films before Christmas, and that is just the number of films that Hallmark put out in years past.

What's the point of having this thread when we have the Hallmark one already?

Didn’t Candace Cameron Bure now move over to GAC for all her future holiday movies? I don’t think I’ve seen anything with her since she bailed on Hallmark.

Re: The Holiday TV Movies discussion thread (Hallmark, Lifetime, UpTV, GAC, Netflix, Freeform and more)

Yes, she left Hallmark because they aired films containing scenes like two dudes or gals kissing each other.

I just want to note that folks like Candace Cameron will be the type of actor to complain that Hollywood should not inject "politics" into their shows or films and just create shows/films that simply entertain an audience. I want to say something to Candace something like if you keep your religion out of the shows/films you star in then I agree that "Hollywood" can make an effort not to go all in on injecting politics into their end product, but man o man, folks like Candace need to realize that lecturing us about how we (liberals/progressives) force politics into tv/film to indoctrinate folks or some such clap trap is mighty rich coming from entertainers who would be well advised to not push their religion on the audience that watches their shows/films. Kind of like asking a physician to heal thyself, we try not to blatantly insert politics into tv/film and they try not to insert religion into their shows/films.

I would love it if Candace came back to Hallmark, they could restart Garage Sale Mysteries which I watched all of when they first aired, and we could even end up with two Aurora Teagarden film series, one where she plays the modern day Aurora, and the other films could star Skyler Samuels as a young Aurora.

I also enjoyed some of her Christmas films for Hallmark. Even folks who are inclined to watch GAF films will admit her GAF stuff is pretty bland and preachy compared to her Hallmark stuff.

Mods, feel free to delete this post if it violates the rules of this forum, but the post contains no personal attacks on other forum members so I hope it is allowed to stand.

Bluelite, I actually do not mind two similar threads, because having two threads lessens the odds that one thread will be long forgotten because no one posted in it for weeks if not months on end, if one thread is not seeing a lot of current activity then perhaps the other one is.

However, if it really rubs folks the wrong way I guess this thread could be merged into the Hallmark one or even outright deleted and it would be no big deal.

Your comment is harmless. Don't even stress about it.

i know that Hallmark thread has been existence for a few years now and great. But, I felt a more broader thread with more networks, streamers, holidays would be an extra incentive to talk about these movies. Let's be real. Since dex14 left this forum, content is a little dry and not as organized anymore. And engagement is way down. I don't know if people are just bored or what. I'm just looking to contribute fresher content to keep this forum engaged a little more. I watch a lot of these movies and I've already said that I watched a few of these movies in early screenings that aren't officially out yet. They are Netflix movies, my 1st instinct isn't to contribute in a "Hallmark" labeled thread where 8 or 9 out of every 10 posts are Hallmark Christmas movies. And most of you guys don't even have cable anyways.

The best Great American Family flicks are the ones starring Merritt Patterson and Laura Osnes, though I think Candace Cameron Bure and Danica McKellar are the stars exclusively attached to the channel. GAF had their first original televison series this summer which was mostly a bore, though I find most of Hallmark's original shows mostly the same. The usual movie formula doesn't work nearly as well in episodic format.

Kiefer Sutherland and Rebel Wilson are starring in a Christmas movie called “Tinsel Town” coming to VOD and limited theaters November 28

and he’s playing a washed up action star.

About Oh. What. Fun.:
Claire Clauster (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the glue that holds her chaotic, lovable family together every holiday season. From perfectly frosted cookies to meticulously wrapped gifts, no one decks the halls quite like Claire. But this year, as her grown kids and distracted husband get swept up in their own seasonal dramas, they make one crucial mistake: they forget their mom. By the time they realize she's missing, Claire’s already set off on a festive adventure of her own - one that doesn’t involve cooking, cleaning, or coordinating anyone else’s chaos. As her family scrambles to find her and salvage their Christmas, Claire rediscovers what the holidays mean when you’re finally free to put yourself first.

With a dazzling ensemble cast including Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, Dominic Sessa, Danielle Brooks, Devery Jacobs, Havana Rose Liu, Maude Apatow, with Jason Schwartzman with Eva Longoria and Joan Chen, Oh. What. Fun. is a spirited holiday comedy from director Michael Showalter and writers Chandler Baker and Showalter. A wink to every overworked holiday host, the film celebrates family, freedom, and the unexpected magic of a Christmas gone off-script.

After a job looking after a high-tech mansion ended in disaster thanks to an irritating insect in Man vs Bee, Trevor Bingley (Rowan Atkinson) has left the stressful world of housesitting for the quieter life of a school caretaker. That is, until a lucrative offer to look after a luxury London penthouse over Christmas proves too tempting to resist. But on the last day of term, when no one comes to collect the Baby Jesus from the school nativity, Trevor finds himself with another undersized and very unexpected companion. With a penthouse to protect and a baby to burp, will Trevor be able to have the calm Christmas he hopes for, or will festivities descend into chaos?

So I just came across this trailer for Candace Cameron Bure's new GAF holiday film called "Timeless Tidings of Joy"

Looks like it's a time travel holiday movie and it premieres in 5 days. Set your DVR. Also stars her daughter Natasha.

Her daughter Natasha has been in a few Great American flicks. GAF premieres usually happen on Saturday nights.

The Alicia Silverstone movie that I posted the trailer for in post 1 is now on Netflix.

As I mentioned, I really didn't care for it. But, it's the holiday season and some of you might like it more than me.

Re: The Holiday TV Movies discussion thread (Hallmark, Lifetime, UpTV, GAC, Netflix, Freeform and more)

It was nothing super special, and an easy watch.

I did like the Pierson Fode character Chad, and love that he also gets a happy ending at the end of the film but I will say no more as that would be a spoiler.

There was a lot to like about this film even if I had no urge to immediately rewatch the film or check it out again a few weeks from now. The cast is great and while the beats of the film are easy to predict the ease of the cast working with each other makes this a pleasant enough film to kick of Netflix's run of Christmas films.

I do plan to watch the GAC film(s?) this weekend. I think I completely missed watching the Candace Cameron film on GAC last year, in fact last year I kind-of just did not pay much attention to all GAC Christmas films (keep in mind, last year Hallmark was still airing a bajillion Countdown To Christmas films filling up most of the time I had to watch these types of films) but this year with Hallmark only airing about half the amount of films they usually do it has been very easy for me to find time to watch the GAC originals this year.

Great American Living (a separate channel) has also been airing a ton of Christmas movies lately.
