Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (S3E09) -- "Terrarium" -- 9/4/25 -- (P+)

In this week’s penultimate episode, Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) must find a way to survive a near-deadly shuttle crash while the Enterprise has only a limited time to rescue her.

According to Trek Core, this episode runs 56 minutes, longest of the season

Pretty decent episode, though it was a riff on/ripoff of Enemy Mine.

The climax, though, was pretty devastating. Makes you view "What is Starfleet?" in a somewhat different light. I don't mind it when Trek goes dark (loved DS9) but that was just fucking mean.

Not sure how I feel about the Metrons being brought in, though it sounds like they might use them to erase some of the Gorn stuff introduced in this series to put it back in line with "Arena." Not really a fan of those kinds of magickal hand-wavey retcons, though.

Yeah…this episode was “fine”, just nothing we haven’t seen before. TNG had a similar episode with Geordi and the Romulan, albeit with a more upbeat ending.

Derivative yes, but I still enjoyed it.

Now I’m hoping they do that rendezvous with the Constellation with Captain Decker visiting the Enterprise instead of Kirk for a change.

I was hoping they'd actually show Decker at some point in the episode since they kept mentioning him.

Looks like the episode featuring the other Constitution Class ship (that was shown briefly in the season trailer) still hasn't aired, so maybe we'll be getting Decker and the Constellation in the season finale.

His son, Will, is also out there somewhere, too. Possibly knocking boots with Ilia on Delta IV.

Can't choose whether Ortegas or M'Benga is the character I care about the least, so I was not into this one.

It bothers me that Una is the only one who's focused on their duties as part of a larger organization --protecting the ship, delivering the medicine, rather than taking big risks to maybe save one person. At least Spock should have been arguing on her side.

Well... I expect both gone by the end of the series. M'Benga probably sooner than later.

Dr. M'Benga is still serving aboard the Enterprise in TOS. He was featured in two episodes: "A Private Little War" and "That Which Survives." Played by Booker Bradshaw.

I know that assuming other planets have matching gravity and atmosphere to Earth is commonplace but having a moon with an orbit that takes it through the sun's plasma still have any type of atmosphere is lazy writing. That thing would be a dead, molten rock.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (S3E09) -- "Terrarium" -- 9/4/25 -- (P+)

Finally we get an Ortegas episode!!

Ortegas and MBenga are some of my favorite characters. Although that list is pretty stacked on this show.

I thought it was great. Yeah sure the general story structure is similar to a few Star Trek episodes but I think that's fine. It worked then and it works here.

I agree killing the Gorn right off was pretty brutal. I was hoping she would survive and then become ships counselor.

It was very unStarfleet like but that's why it was La'an, with her history with the Gorn as well as recent events and even her interview on the documentary saying you shoot first it was all leading up to that moment. Hopefully there will be some follow through with that decision.

I'm glad it didn't turn out to be that Ortegas was some kind of Gorn sleeper agent. That the teaser at the beginning of the show was more PTSD than anything else.

Yeah, I would have bailed on this show if they pulled something like an Ash Tyler with her.

I guess there's still time.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (S3E09) -- "Terrarium" -- 9/4/25 -- (P+)

Was that the single worst storyline in all of Trek??? Maybe. Probably.

Maybe only trumped by the somehow even more inane plot point (or more like resolution) of the burn turning out to be some whiny kelpian.

Trek works so much better as a serialized show than focusing on one single season long arch.

Not even close. Worst Trek stories are still the cause of The Burn and Picard getting an android body.

You ever see "Code of Honor" from TNG's first season? yikes.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but a serialized show is one that focuses on a season-long (or series-long) storyline. An episodic show is one that has separate stories for each episode.

Yeah agreed the burn was the worst. I will give Picard getting an android body a pass because it didn't take up much screen time and was just one big nothing burger.

Oh yeah...the infamous Code of Honor episode. But that and other infamous episodes like Threshold only take up a single episode of a ~24 episode season. There are going to be some clunkers. But you can just easily compartmentalize and "throw" that episode away. STD was the worst because they would dedicate entire seasons on these idiotic plots and ruin countless episodes and characters dedicated to this one idiotic plot point.

Whoops...yep you're right. Thanks. IMHO Star Trek works best as an episodic show.

Serialized can be fine but you're gambling a LOT of hours of TV and if the over all plot doesn't have a satisfactory ending the whole season is kaput. Of course DS9 had the best balance. An overall series arc that was so well done but also existing within the greater universe of Star Trek. So not every single conversation or episode was dedicated to the dominion war. Plenty of stories happened within that larger backdrop.

So is next week not the puppet episode? It doesn't seem like it but it's the last episode of the season? Or is the puppet episode for another season?

Edit: Season 4

So I guess it's too late for them to course correct from the excessive display of shenanigans we've been subjected to this season. I guess at least it's not the season ender this week.

Yeah, it's been a good season. I think I liked the first 2 seasons much more, but it's still a very enjoyable show.

A coworker was watching SNW, even though she had never seen more than a handful of TOS episodes, so she started watched the entire TOS series this summer. I offered to give her guidance on episodes she could skip, but she said she wanted to watch them all.

My opinion is that a third of TOS is very good, a third is bad, and the rest fall somewhere in between. We shouldn't expect any TV show to produce masterpieces with every episode.

I like the fun SNW episodes more than the actiony ones, but someone else may feel the opposite. It is enjoyable to watch, and having new Star Trek content is always a welcome prospect after 60 years.

Fairly good assessment of TOS episodes... The majority are rewatchable but that bad third.... very very rarely.

I meant at least the puppet episode wasn't the season ender. That would have been weird.

Definitely not meh. But almost certainly not quite up to par with Season 1 and 2 depending on your likeability/tolerance of shenanigans. I have thoroughly enjoyed it but there have been some misses along with the hits where previous seasons every single episode was a hit. I think a lot of people are just exaggerating negativity for the views.
