Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

What are the best and worst reboot/revival series with most/partial of the original cast. My picks:

Best: "Veronica Mars", "Roseanne" (Season 10), "Dexter", "The X-Files", "Arrested Development", "Twin Peaks", "Kids in the Hall"

Worst: "And Just Like That", "Will & Grace", "Frasier", "BH90210", "Fuller House", every "Brady Bunch" spin-off/variety show/TV movie

Watchable (somewhere in between): "The Conners", "Murphy Brown", "Dallas", "Mad About You"

re: Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

Best:
24: Live Another Day
CSI Vegas (the William Petersen season)
Dexter: Resurrection
Star Trek: Picard (season 3)
Cobra Kai - Not a revival of a TV series, but a revival of a movie series and made relevant again. And it had some original cast.
The Killing (Netflix revival)

Good/Okay
Criminal Minds: Evolution
Dallas
Prison Break
Strike Back
Dexter: New Blood
90210 (CW version)
Saved by the Bell
BH90210 - You know, I know a lot of you hated the different take on the revival, but I found it somewhat enjoyable.
Mission: Impossible (1988) - Peter Graves returned.
Law and Order: Criminal Intent (USA Network revival)

Disappointing:
The X-Files (The standalone episodes were great, but the serialized arc stuff was crap)

Bad:
Knight Rider (2008) - I count this one because David Hasselhoff appeared in the Pilot movie, so it's cannon.
Heroes Reborn
24: Legacy

Re: Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

Was Saved By the Bell good (I assume you mean the Peacock original one, or do you mean college years)?

Heroes Reborn was my first thought for worst, though it may be on par with the latter seasons of the original. Just so mind blowing how they have the leeway to like hit the refresh button and they come up with.. that.

If we're counting tv "reboots" of movies with partial cast, I'd say Friday Night Lights is one of the best. Buffy (from film to tv) probably doesn't count even though it retained the most important part, the writer/creator.

If cartoons count then X-men '97 is one of the best.

Justified: City Primeval was pretty bad. The final scene was the only part of it worth watching.

yes, the Peacock original. And everyone from the original cast returned except Dustin Diamond. Yes I enjoyed it and it came out during the pandemic and surprisingly they actually wrote it in the show.

If I don't count "rescued" shows like The Killing or Criminal Intent, I'd say Veronica Mars and 24: Live Another Day are the only revivals I enjoy unreservedly. Others aren't terrible, but I have my reservations.

I like Picard, but I am interested to see what people list as "best" or even "good." Off the top of my head, I'd say this is usually a recipe for suck soup.

Something like Picard: S3 was what I wanted for Picard, but before S3 there was the mediocre S1 and the terrible S2.

They should have started Picard with a big attack on starfleet and only the museum ship Enterprise was the only working ship. They get back the old cast and some new characters and have a new crew, but don't give me a Star Trek season on earth in the 21st century.

"King of the HIll" seems well received so far as well. And my kids love Phineas and Ferb and Gumball. Though animation is a bit easier to do a "day after" sequel years later than live action, of course.

I had completely forgotten about the fourth season of Veronica Mars, I thought you guys were talking about the crowdfunded movie.

If we’re talking about shows of the streaming era (like not the SyFy BSG), I haven’t watched most of them. X-Files had some moments, and I only lasted a handful of episodes of Night Court.

Did this entry in the franchise have many members of the original cast in any of the main roles?

Re: Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

Forgot to add, another one that ended up being disappointing to bad was Melrose Place 2009 on the CW

It got very messy towards the end and they kept adding original cast members from the old FOX show when it was pretty obvious the new cast didn't really work. The CW cancelled it after 1 season.

A few others I did like as well:

Longmire and Lucifer. Both revived by Netflix after being cancelled by their networks and they pretty much kept all of the original cast.

Re: Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

It’s so crazy because a little over a year ago I would have said Dexter had by far the most disappointing revival with Dexter: New Blood. I hated that ending, and in my view it was somehow worse than the original series finale.

Now though.. Dexter: Resurrection has been amazing so far. I shouldn’t even jinx it with a few episodes (and seasons) of the show left. The show and character just seem completely.. well, resurrected and it’s hitting right. I hope it sticks the landing, and we finally get a satisfying ending to Dexter someday.

Awesome:
Twin Peaks The Return
Ash Vs Evil Dead

Good:
Picard
The X-Files
Criminal Minds: Evolution

Luckily I stayed away from the rest. Now movie reboot/revivals are another thing. Most that I have seen are crap.

Re: Best and Worst Reboot/Revival Series (with Most/Partial of the Original Cast)

Great:
Phineas & Ferb revival is fantastic. They haven't missed a beat.
Veronica Mars was solid.
The Wonder Years reboot was very good, just never got into a good enough groove to make it a hit.
Party Down was pretty fantastic. I marathoned the whole series and season 3 fit right in with what came before.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: I'm not a big Clone Wars (or Clone Wars era) fan but the revival season coupled with Rebels and Bad Batch finally covered a time period and told some stories that were interesting. That last season was great.

Good Enough:
Mad About You was indeed watchable. Not great but didn't tarnish anything that came before. I think they were on the right track but needed more time to get back into the groove.

Bailed On:
X-files love the OG but didn't make it far into the revival.
Young Justice. Same thing. OG two seasons were great, but never made it through the revival season.
CSI (with Grissom) revival was good, but bailed on the second season.

Unwatchable:
Night Court only watched a couple episodes but it was hot trash.

They brought back several of the cast members of the original as their characters but the show was more about the next generation of kids at Degrassi.

Not out yet, but I struggle to see how the Buffy revival can be anything more than "not that great"

Just seems like it will be so hard to capture the spirit of the original and appeal to today's audiences.

Like the 90210 reboot, Degrassi: The Next Generation was centered around the daughter of one of the original cast members (recast, as she was shown as a baby in Degrassi Jr. High), and had a bunch of other older cast members, though not necessarily all regulars. They're actually releasing a documentary on the series fairly soon:

Huh. I apparently pay no attention to TV revivals, as I have seen NONE of the things y'all are talking about. Hell, I watched only a few of the original shows.

When the hell was there an X-Files revival? I thought Peele or Coogler was doing a reboot?

Had no clue Peacock did a new Saved by the Bell . . .

I knew about The Connors and watched a little of it. What is the other revival (Season 10) for Roseanne?

Some pop culture pundit you are.

Saved by the Bell was streaming on Peacock during Covid. Lasted 2 seasons.

And the X-Files seasons 10 and 11 aired in 2016 and 2018 on FOX. It was a pretty big deal at the time.
