Actors you can't believe won an Oscar?

Renée Zellweger
Jennifer Hudson

I thought they were both great in their respective roles but not Oscar worthy imo, let alone 2 for Zellweger.

who do you think didn't deserve an Oscar?

Hudson was cast in a supporting role to fucking BEYONCE, and she stole the show. It takes a lot more talent and performance skill to give a great performance in a musical drama.

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury should not have won. Lip-synching is no bueno.

Casey Affleck

His character was a scumbag New Englander. Casey himself is a scumbag New Englander. It required little to no acting.

George Burns for The Sunshine Boys. I thought he was completely lifeless, and so much of his dialogue sounded like line-reading than a character to me.

Jamie Lee Curtis. She wasn't even the Best Supporting Actress in her own movie. I was flabbergasted that she was even nominated, TBH.

And yeah, everyone who watched Dreamgirls knew Hudson was gonna win the moment her big song ended. One of the greatest filmed musical numbers of recent year. I think she was more deserving than other recent musical winners of that award like Anne Hathaway and Arirana DeBose (but I was fine with all three).

My stinker award goes to Rex Harrison for My Fair Lady. (1964). He could barely act! No way in hell was he better than Peter Sellers in Doctor Strangelove. No way!

Alicia Vikander

Not that she’s a bad actress or isn’t deserving, I just still consider her as an up-and-comer and completely forget she has already won an Oscar.

She won a bunch of critics awards for a combo of The Danish Girl and Ex Machina. I think her performance in Ex Machina was better and absolutely awards-worthy, but the other role was classic Oscar bait.

Re: Actors you can't believe won an Oscar?

The "correct" answer is Beatrice Straight. This is her ENTIRE performance. Five minutes, one Oscar. And a record that has stood for nearly 50 years.

It was a weird year, in that there wasn't any great performances nominated against her. Jodie Foster game a fine child performance in Taxi Driver, but she was so young. Puper Laurie was pretty over the top in Carrie. I don't even remember Jane Alexander in All The President's Men.
If Talia Shire was considered in this category rather than Lead Actress she might have won.

I liked Rachel McAdams in Spotlight better. But I do like Alicia's work. She was delightful in "Man from Uncle", a really fun movie..

Malek could have been more deserving had the script been willing to show some of the personal side of Freddie Mercury.

Personally, I'd remove all the Oscars from actors who merely do an impression of a famous person, usually someone beloved and dead, and their impression is enough of a reminder of that person that we loved and so the actor or actress gets a statue.

I might make an exception for Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi though, because he showed a side of Lugosi that we never knew from the movies he made. But then again, there's a lot to be said for creating a totally original character out of just the words on the page, the way Samuel L. Jackson made Jules Winnfield an often imitated but never duplicated movie character...

That's because that side never existed. It's a fabrication. Landau was great though and deserved the Oscar.

Re: Actors you can't believe won an Oscar?

I know this is not playing by the thread rules since this is just a "nominee" but it always blows my mind that Sandra Locke was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter.

Granted, I have never seen it and need to one day watch it but after seeing her in so many other Clint Eastwood movies, it is difficult to imagine her even being remotely considered for an Oscar. It was her first movie. Was it just beginners luck? I mean, even in her non-Clint Eastwood roles, both TV and movies, she was terrible.

Well there ya go then. He created a personality that was never there, the sign of a good actor. Like I said, I'd probably make an exception for that performance.

Although a part of me is now disappointed knowing that Bela Lugosi never called Boris Karloff a "cocksucker".

Based on the "You Must Remember This" podcast about them, I bet he did.

I really don't like Gilbert Gottfried as an actress. To be honest most of the acting in typical Woody Allen movies isn't Oscar worthy in my opinion. Cate Blanchett was great in Blue Jasmine, but that was just a drama directed by Allen and not the one movie he remade over and over again for 40 years.

I'll say a lot of bad things about Woody Allen, but making the same movie over and over again for 40 years isn't one of them. Your picture of Gilbert Gottfried is a perfect example of this, as how wildly different in style and tone are the two films she won for (using two different styles of performance, unlike other two-time winners) Hannah and her Sisters to Bullets Over Broadway. He's done broad comedy, serious drama, crime, expressionism, films set in New York, films set in European locations, dark films, whimsical films, good films, terrible films... I believe the patterns that repeat are more due to his incredibly prolific filmography than lack of artistic ambition.

But of course, none of that has any bearing on your reaction to Gilbert Gottfried's acting, and if you don't like her, that's fair enough.

Neither did I. But I loved him as a comedian.

Agreed. To her credit I don't think anyone was more surprised than JLC. It definitely felt more like a lifetime achievement win/popular win than for that actual performance.

Mikey Madison

It was a good maybe ok movie but sad for all the people who had long careers like Willem Dafoe and still have no Oscars to show for it.

Demi Moore should have won for the Substance.

You can't believe that the lead actress of the film that won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing, who was the title character and in almost every scene, won the Oscar for Best Actress?
Against a long time popular actress, in her first nominated role, who starred in a body horror flick that won nothing but Best Make-Up?
That award was incomprehensible to you?

It was sad for an actor who ALSO got an Oscar nomination for a Sean Baker movie? I think Wthem Dafoe was probably okay with the result.

Re: Actors you can't believe won an Oscar?

Florida Project was a much better movie comparedd to Sam Rockwell and 3 Billboards.

Mira Sorvino for Mighty Aphrodite.

I like her but that was not a Oscar worthy performance.
