Absolutely stunning cinematography! Totally Malick-esk in the best way. Acting from everyone A+. Can definitely see Joel get a nom. And with all that, be forewarned, this is one damn sad story.

Gorgeous and heartbreaking. And the best movie Terrence Malick has never made. I was curious about it's 3:2 aspect ratio and found this online. From the cinematographer (Adolpho Veloso): "We looked at old photographs of logging from that [1920s] era, and that sparked the idea of using the 3:20 aspect ratio. Memories, I think, are associated with the aspect ratio that you find in old photos, or even new photos on your phone. We used that to convey the feeling that you’re looking through memories and putting together a life through those images."

Watching it, the logging imagery reminded of the old NFB short Spartree. It's on YouTube, though not a very good copy.

Yeah it was beautiful to look at and nicely brief. Sadder than I was expecting. Wonderful performance by Edgerton.

Movies rarely make me cry but man this one got to me. Beautiful film.

Train Dreams is the rare adaptation that improves on the source material, IMO. I loved the Denis Johnson novella when I first read it, but it felt somehow incomplete (admittedly, by design). The movie fills those gaps. What the reader felt at a remove in the book (reinforcing what Johnson was going for, the sense of a long-ago anonymous life) became immediate and tangible in the film, which is more concerned with the importance of this one man's lonely, tragic, and yet meaningful life. As if the novella is watching the character only peripherally, and the movie is right up close to him. Two very different experiences, but the myriad changes the screenplay makes turn Train Dreams into a magnificent experience that makes the grief and toil and transient joy much more vivid. One of my absolute favorites of the year. I only wish I'd seen it on the big screen. I have a nice setup, but Train Dreams demands the cinema.
