Trainwreck: Poop Cruise documentary (Netflix)
It was supposed to be a luxury cruise: a four day round trip from Galveston, Texas to Cozumel, Mexico. But for the 4,000 passengers and crew on board, the reality proves catastrophically different. After an engine room fire destroys electrical cables supplying the entire ship, the boat is left drifting with no power for propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning or... worst of all, flushing toilets. Soon raw sewage leaks out all over the ship, food supplies start dwindling and passengers begin to revolt. As the cruise company races to control the fallout, a media frenzy ensues. Soon everyone is talking about 'The Poop Cruise'.
Did anyone here happen to watch this documentary that dropped on Netflix a few weeks ago? Oh my goodness, It was both hilarious and repulsive listening to the accounts of what happened

I vaguely recalled this disaster from 12 years ago. There are pretty interesting interviews. And yes, there is cell phone that captures what a disaster this was including the leakage of the human waste

I'm amazed how unprepared that cruise line was for a fire and power outage.
It's really short and goes by fast at under 1 hour. I know some of you will probably roll your eyes, but it was an interesting watch.

Yeah, I saw it. Not sure how much discussion it will generate. It's gross. But serves those folks right for booking with Carnival.
Two quick thoughts :
1) Could they have possibly found a more stereotypical slimy personal injury attorney if they tried? That guy was such a cliche with his gaudy office and massive cigar.
2) How were these people still filming after 3 or 4 days? What kind of battery did their cell phone have?

I'm a frequent cruiser (16 cruises completed, 1 upcoming in January), so I was excited to watch this. I was familiar with the incident.
The best story was the poop lasagna!
A few days ago, I had a dream that I was on a poop cruise

To be fair, Carnival is a lower priced cruise line so that people can get some kind of vacation in. I’m sure you’re all very afluent and can afford better.
What happened on this cruise does sound like a nightmare.

I plan to take my first cruise in 2026 to Alaska (as no passport needed, believe it or not I do not own a passport) and this story will not stop me but I think I get enough of the picture of how things went down on this ill-fated cruise from the posts in this thread that I am fine not watching this documentary.
I have watched quite a few documentary movies/series on Netflix in the past few years but I will be happy to pass on this one, lol!!
I usually do not do vacations, but I have been watching a lot of Youtube's put up by Cruisers and am looking forward to the trip. I am using cash back dollars from my CC and some gift cash I have been stashing over the past couple years so this will be a completely paid cruise where I do not have to put myself into debt to have fun.
Had no clue you were such a frequent Cruiser MLBFan24, that is awesome.

Without knowing your itinerary, I believe you still need a passport. A "distant foreign port" is required for Alaska cruises (for non-US flagged ships). Is Canada one of the ports? If so, you will 100% need a passport. Even if you plan on staying on the ship while in Canada. Canadian authorities will still review the cruise manifest when it arrives in the Canadian port. At the very least, you will get denied boarding at your cruise check-in.
However, I don't know your cruise details. I highly recommend double checking on the passport requirement. The good thing is you have a lot of time to resolve this, since the 2026 Alaska season doesn't start until around late April / May.
Also without getting too personal, Canada won't let anyone enter the country that has a felony on record. So if anyone in your group has had a DUI in the United States for example, that may be problematic and you'll need to take extra steps with the Canadian government to get approved for entry (before the cruise).

My Father in Law forgot his passport at home, when he went to board the Alaskan cruise ship in Seattle, they wouldn't let him on. He had to fly back to Vegas and then buy a super expensive last-minute ticket and meet up with the ship in Juneau. The cruise was to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Well...I guess I will take advantage of my AAA membership that should make it easier for me to obtain my passport going through my local AAA office.
I am absolutely committed to cruising next year so no more procrastinating for me and I should start the process to get my passport this month.
I kind-of had a feeling that I might need a passport because I think I have seen in articles and even in Youtube videos that a cruise to Alaska might involve a stop over at a port in Canada and the replies in this thread confirm that to be the case. Better to be safe than sorry and get my passport.
Folks in my office look at me funny that I still do not have a passport and I am heading to my mid-fifties (I know, I know...long overdue for me to get a passport).
Hey, I did mention that I usually do not travel, lol.

Almost all cruises stop in a foreign port, for tax reasons. Even cruises around the Hawaiian Islands. It's a lot cheaper for the cruise line that way.

Decker, MLB, thanks for the info.
Also, no worries folks, I will put any future travel related questions I have in the Travel thread so a post with the word poop in it is not always the first post folks see when clicking the TV Talk forum, although it does make me giggle a bit at the idea of keeping this post front and center every time I click on this forum, lol!
I can be so immature at times.

Poop lasagna, a visual! (Looks like AI.)
Nicked from reddit. Appears that the term comes from the Navy when the toilets on the ships stop working.
(Yeah, I image googled the term. I'm not proud.)
