Roofman (2025, D: Cianfrance) S: Tatum, Dunst, Stanfield, Temple, Dinklage

How far would you go to change who you are? #Roofman is coming only to theatres October 10.
Based on an unbelievable true story, Roofman follows Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.

I downloaded a bunch of podcasts before a road trip last week and one of them was a Criminal episode about this case. It seemed like it would make a good movie.

Reddit has confirmation that this will be the AMC Screen Unseen tonight (and probably whatever Regal version). I went ahead and booked this one instead of my planned Avatar 2 IMAX 3D.

^ Indeed, saw this last night as part of the Cinemark Secret Movie series.
My wife and I found it mildly diverting. I gather it sticks pretty close to the real story, although it tries to inject emotional depth -- and a sense of wholesomeness --- that might not really have been there. The end credits feature interviews and footage surrounding the 2000-2004 crime. As a film, it's too long at over 2 hours; it would have been more lively at 1:40. I did feel myself wanting to check my phone for the time. Performances are fine, including a rather hilarious but thankless one by Ben Mendelsohn. Unfortunately, "Roofman" ends up being pretty forgettable, but there are a few laughs and some moments where you think, Did he really get away with that? The fact that it's a true story kinda hobbles the film, preventing it from having an interesting resolution. IMO.

I enjoyed Roofman more than I did Smashing Machine from a day earlier. I felt like there was supposed to be a creepy undertone of his charm, only really hinted at in a negative way when Dunst pushed back when he was speeding and spinning out driving with her and her kids, and while the kids were laughing and having fun, she scolded him that it was reckless. But you caught glimpses of her feeling uncomfortable as he kept buying things for her and her kids, but it would have elevated the movie if the audience felt more that way rather than the romcom tone they mostly kept. But still, you were still rooting for him to get away at the end. What I also found unusual was how exactly her age Kirsten Dunst look, they kept her makeup and outfits plain and ordinary, they didn't try to doll her up just to play up the romance angle of the movie.

I think this looks really, really good even though I'm not a Tatum fan at all.
I am shocked that it's over two hours though

Having worked several years at Toys R Us I feel an obligation to see this one - and it does look pretty good.

Likeable stars help make this watchably entertaining, but the runtime and certainty of the outcome worked against it.

I recommend Beyond the Shadows . . . It isn't the highest quality, but the hosts are a hoot. They did a pretty good job with this story. I remember hearing it and thinking, "Damn, this would make a good movie."
