F1: The Movie (2025, D: Koskinski) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

Dubbed "the greatest that never was," Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He'll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition--and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.

Yes, I know this doesn't officially open wide until Thursday night. But, early Fan IMAX screenings start tomorrow.
I'm seeing it in IMAX tomorrow night. I'm psyched for it.
Even though this is a WB distributed movie, Apple produced it and I'm not so sure this will even get a physical media release. Apple has said they aren't interested in releasing their content on physical media. Killers of the Flower Moon was also an Apple movie, distributed by Paramount 2 years ago and never got a physical media release.
Kerry Condon was on Colbert the other night promoting the movie. I really like her. Gorgeous and I love her thick Irish accent.

Absolutely stunning on IMAX. The camera work on the cars was incredible and it's a huge bummer this likely won't get a physical release because this would be a day one 4k purchase. It's sorta by the numbers kinda story but I was locked in the entire time. Find the time to see this in a theater.

Re: F1: The Movie (2025, D: Koskinski) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread
I just came back from the preview, definitely felt like a Bruckheimer type movie with lots of "yeahs!" and pumping fists, etc. After the second major crash, I was checking my watch and was thinking that I still had some 45 minutes left in the movie, but thankfully, it got back on track (literally) and the pace picked back up. It felt like an IMAX movie for sure, the giant screen was edge to edge full, it feels different seeing the image on the screen go all the way up to the ceiling and down to the floor, much more immersive. The last race, I kind of got lost on what happened in that final stretch, maybe I was losing focus, but suddenly one of the racers was knocked out but still cheering and happy, so team player, go team, something something. While I'm sure this will end up on Apple+ streaming, I do think that Warner's involvement should mean a 4K physical release this fall.

I just got back my IMAX screening in Irvine, CA. Had to drive 30 minutes to get there. But, it was so worth it.
This movie was made for IMAX. They really utilized the format well as well as the aspect ratio. It was stunning both visually and from a music/score standpoint. The race sequences were pretty spectacular. I loved Kosinski's positioning of his cameras. You really felt like you were in the cockpit of the F1 car.
F1 has a lot of similarities to Gran Turismo, which I also liked. This was more of a veteran's last hurrah, while GT was an underdog story. But, I think I give the edge to this one. GT was quickly forgotten. This will be more memorable for this genre. If I had to make some minor complaints, I think they could have developed some of the characters more and it's a little by the numbers as already mentioned. I think Damson Idris' cocky rookie driver was slightly underdeveloped. Pitt was good and he was actually playing a character that was likely close to his actual age.
Cliches and soms familiarity and all It was a very satisfying movie experience.
A solid B+ from me. I might see it again in 4DX.

I thought it was very similar to *Gran Turismo* in that it hit a lot of the same beats for this kind of story. The story did nothing new in any way but the execution was so good that it was all a marvel to behold. I would've liked a little more cameos from the other drivers (akin to the scene with the team leaders) but that's a minor gripe.
This was absolutely worth seeing in IMAX, for the visuals and the sound.
Highly recommended.

Watched it in IMAX last night with the family. We all enjoyed it. Definitely agree to IMAX on this one.

Yeah, it was awesome. Loudest fucking IMAX presentation I've ever been to -- that I can remember. Last I checked, this is getting a 4K disc release from WB. ATV+ owns the PVOD and streaming rights.
I do think the final race and how it resolves was somewhat lackluster. Everything else leading up to it was epic.

Seeing this again tomorrow in 4DX using the $5 T-Mobile promo.
Apparently this made $10M in the Thursday night previews. M3Gan made around $1.5M
I saw Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde's out of the theater review last night on YouTube and they weren't fans. They thought it was way too long and other issues with it.

Entertaining sports drama featuring great racing sequences from director Joseph Kosinski, thrilling score by Hans Zimmer and fine performances by Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem. Not a fan of racing in general but this one was pretty solid. ****/*****

I saw it a second time this afternoon in 4DX. It was basically like a car racing amusement park ride. I’ve talked about the format before.
Pretty packed audience for this presentation. Anyway, I think I enjoyed the movie even more the second time. The race sequences were so riveting and Hans Zimmer’s score was incredible. Even if you have only rudimentary knowledge of auto racing, I think you can still enjoy this. I had no idea how much strategy was involved.
Performances were all good. I especially enjoyed the scene between Pitt and Kerry Condon on the balcony in Vegas. You really got to know his character and they played off each other so well.
I’m hoping this gets a physical media release, but not optimistic since Apple controls the rights.

No imax or fancy pants theaters round these parts, but I’m catching this tomorrow. I know next to nothing about racing, but I like Pitt & Koskinski so what’s $10?

It's a shame the only way to get the score on CD is on the 2-disc
of the album. I don't care about any of the songs on disc 2, which can be purchased separately sans score. There should have been a score only release too.

Huge opening weekend. $55.6M in the States and $144M worldwide. Apple’s and Pitt’s best opening ever.
F1 is huge internationally and this will make most of its money overseas.

I thought it was good, but just had too many sports clichés to fully enjoy it. I am glad I saw this in the theater though and I’m glad to see it’s doing well.

Going to need it with a reported production budget around $200M (could be as high as $300M). And apparently $30M went to Brad Pitt's pay alone.

It apparently was $300m but after rebates and tax incentives due to the locations they shot was substantially lower. So the all-in $200m is likely accurate.
