Update: Eric Dane (The Last Ship, Grey’s Anatomy) has died from ALS
GMA showed a prerecorded interview with him this morning. It’s a really sad watch. Dane can no longer use his right arm. And he looks frail and weak.
Here is the interview. I know most here don’t like watching long YouTube videos in this forum, but it’s under 9 minutes and a really compelling watch.
He says he’s going to try to keep working. He’s currently on Euphoria. And he has a new Amazon show called Countdown coming up.

Ugh. Tough watch. ALS is so freaking scary. One of the worst lottery diseases you can win.

He has the right attitude.
I remember doing the ice bucket challenge all those years ago.
My father-in-law had a best friend, named Jim, who was diagnosed with ALS and we watched him slowly deteriorate over the course of 18 months. It was sad to watch but he never lost his smile and twinkle in his eye.
We later learned that the doctor that delivered our first two children, was diagnosed and worked until he could no longer "catch babies popping out." He died soon after the youngest of his eight children turned two.

It appears the ice bucket challenge is making a comeback. My daughter's best friend just did it. I definitely recognize him. Sad to see.

My mom died from it in 2006. Her first symptom was her legs giving out from under her out of the blue one day at work. She managed to get back up after a while, but she had no clue what was going on. The hospital did a complete MRI on her and didn't see anything. It wasn't until she had moved out to TX (where she was retiring) that a spinal tap finally figured out what was going on with her. She lived 18 months with it. She could have lived longer, but she didn't want to. Her way of checking out was to stop eating since she no longer had use of her hands and arms to grab the bottle of morphine she was prescribed for the pain.
She was totally paralyzed by the time she died. In her last couple of weeks, she could barely talk anymore. She was in a coma the last week before she died on Christmas night. It was her favorite holiday. She was determined to lived out her last one I guess.

Update, sadly Dane passed away
https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/eri...ntent=&utm_id=
I'm stunned at how fast his health deteriorated in the last 8 months. He goes from being able to speak in a full interview and still looking relatively stable to now being gone.
I've seen some people, including some actors like Kenny Mitchell, who died from ALS, still being alive for a few more years, but ending up in a wheelchair on a breathing tube.

I had a relative that recently died from ALS. It was shocking how quickly it can progress. It's an ugly disease.

Prior to his death, Eric Dane sat for an interview with the understanding that it would only be shared with the world after he passed.
In that conversation, he reflected on his battle with ALS, his struggles with addiction, and his marriage to Rebecca Gayheart: “I will never, by the time anybody sees this, have fallen in love with another woman as deeply as I fell in love with Rebecca.”

I have a friend who got engaged last year and was planning a summer 2026 wedding. At the end of last year, her future husband was diagnosed with ALS. It is now expected (best case) that he will not survive beyond 2027.

If you don't want to watch his Netflix interview (but you should. He's present, articulate and thoughtful), these were his last words. And while it's to his daughters, it should resonate with anyone.

Saw his recent guest spot on Brilliant Minds. He played a firefighter battling ALS. It was very tough to watch as I knew that a lot of what they were portraying was what he was actually going through. Even though he couldn't move or speak very well, he gave a hell of a performance. I really enjoyed a lot of his performances.

Even though he was in obvious decline in that Netflix video compared to the ABC News interview last summer, he was still very articulate. Man, just awful what that disease ultimately does to you. I’m glad he’s no longer suffering.

RIP He was a big 49ers fan and wish he was still around if they finally found a way to win a title.

Patrick Dempsey talks about Dane’s passing. He said Dane was bedridden and was losing his ability to talk
