Francis Ford Coppola AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Wed 6/18/2025 TNT

The Godfather movie reflections and the Outsiders cast reunion.

This should be fun.

TNT will only air once but if the pattern holds true TCM should air it again sometime in the Summer too.

I'm not risking it, but wouldn't something like this stream on Max after it airs?

They could have done this 30 years ago and not much would have changed in his career legacy.

You're not expecting a long tribute to Megalopolis?

Whoa, looking through his filmography, he was the co-director of Supernova?!

Aside from Megalopolis, his last twenty five years has been tinkering with Apocalypse Now (2x), the Cotton Club, the Outsiders, One From the Heart, and even Twixt, one of the small 21st century films that had a very limited cultural impact.

Not surprised at the “what have you done for me lately” reaction Coppola always seems to receive, whenever his name is mentioned.

In the past 25 years, aside from Megalopolis (which I loved), Tetro is a fantastic film.

Fingers-crossed that there's some mention of the few Nudie Cuties he made!

Maybe but if NFL games do not stay on Netflix I am not risking the chance to miss this show.

I have saved a lot of those shows on DVD over the years.

On the other hand it's not to bad if you have directed 3 or 4 masterpieces by the age of 40. I'm 43 and haven't even directed a shitty movie.

Take away his 70s output and he’s still made a bunch of terrific films. He hasn’t been able to live up to those films, fair, but….neither has anyone else.

If I ignore the 70 and Godfather 3, I would consider him to be a good director, but not as legendary director. More in the 2nd tier of good directors like Joel Schumacher. With The Outsiders, The Rainmaker or Dracula he still made some of my favorites that aren't masterpieces.

there is no way he is in the same league as Joel Schumacher.

Re: Francis Ford Coppola AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Wed 6/18/2025 TNT

Other directors wished they had Coppola's career.

it would be hard for anybody to top his 70's movies since those were all-time classics and masterpieces though it would have been nice if he had a career like Scorsese where he still puts out quality product.

BTW there are no AFI shows on HBO Max and they have a expiratuon date if they do appear.

Maybe some clips on Youtube and get lucky if somebody posted a full show.

I’m pretty good at separating the art from the artist generally speaking, but after I learned about his connection to Victor Salva it’s been difficult.
I’ll always love the Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Conversation, One From The Heart…though.

I get that regarding Salva's art, but Coppola was just an early supporter, even bevor Salva was arrested, I'd say there isn't any connection between Salva's crimes and Coppola's art.

Coppola did produce Jeepers Creepers 1 & which were released after Salva’s ridiculously short prison sentence.
Like I said I still enjoy Coppola’s films, it’s just unfortunate he helped bankroll a human piece of shit.

No one's in the same league as Schumacher. Why hasn't he gotten an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award?!

Doing a search, I see Nicole Kidman has won an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award already. She's younger than me. That really makes me feel old.

And she's mostly made of spare parts by now, so she's even younger

Good for him. Apocalypse Now is one of my top 5 of all time.

Hey, if the female lead in BATMAN FOREVER can get that award, certainly the film's director should have gotten it.

This was pretty good but surprised Sofia was not a presenter or doing that interview with her dad made up for it since maybe she was far away filming a movie?

Stevie Wonder singing "Stay Gold" would have been a nice addition if possible.

Spielberg said the "Godfather" was the greatest American film ever made.

I did not know Coppola broke all 4 of his Oscars.
