RIP (2025, D: Carnahan) S: Damon, Affleck
EXCLUSIVE: Here is a package that certainly will heat up the summer market. Deadline is hearing that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are attached to star in the thriller RIP, with Joe Carnahan writing and directing. Affleck and Damons company Artists Equity are producing with a plan to shoot this fall.
Plot details are being kept under wraps other than it being described as a crime thriller. The project is expected to find a distributor soon as interest has been drawn from theatrical and streaming buyers.
Since launching Artists Equity in November 2022, Damon and Affleck have released its first film, Air, in spring 2023 to glowing reviews and a solid box office performance. Since then, the studio has produced the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told for Amazon MGM Studios and Small Things Like These, which opened this years Berlin Film Festival and won the Silver Bear for supporting actress Emily Watson.
As for RIP, the package came together pretty quickly in recent weeks. Affleck and Damon were looking for a new project under the company banner as Affleck was finishing up production on his sequel to The Accountant. The two tried to do another crime thriller, Animals, at the top of the year, but scheduling with The Accountant 2 couldnt be worked out and that was put on pause.
No stranger to crime thrillers, Carnahan has made a name for himself over the years with such films as Narc and Smokin Aces (which Affleck also appeared in), and audiences can expect similar fireworks on this project given the talent already involved.
Affleck and Damon are repped by WME. Carnahan is repped by CAA.

Nice. I miss Joe Carnahan directing films. He does them few and far between.

I'll be honest, when I saw the thread title, I thought one of them was dead and my heart sank for a few seconds.

Written and directed by Joe Carnahan with Artists Equity producing, The RIP follows a group of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray after they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on. Michael Joe and Kevin Halloran of Artists Equity exec produced
The trailer was shown live tonight on Netflix’s Tudum live event.
But Netflix hasn’t released it on YouTube.
It looks pretty badass and has a great cast. If you have Netflix, forward to 1:00 hour into the event to see the trailer.

Gritty Carnahan is better than campy-action Carnahan.

Saw this trailer during the Netflix presentation a few months ago. Looks dark and gritty. Which I dig.

Thread already exists. Probably couldn't find it if you misspell Ben Affleck's last name in the Search bar.

I'll watch but I'd be lying if I said I was excited about this - even with the cast. We've just had so many of these movies over the years...I would've liked to see Ben & Matt do another kind of movie - something like Air which was such a pleasant surprise.

Netflix is the great imposter when it comes to anticipated movies. I cant tell you how many Netflix movie trailers Ive watched that had me thinking, Oh that looks great! Im going to have to resubscribe to Netflix for this! Only to read reviews when its released to find out its just another shitty movie thrown on a streaming platform to take up content space.
This looks good though! I might have to resubscribe to Netflix for this!

I've been really looking forward to this. It feels like I've been waiting forever.
Amusingly, I just watched my 4K of Dogma yesterday. So seeing Damon and Affleck in this latest trailer was jarring.

This was ok. Typical Carnahan good cop/bad cop setting. I watched it for Damon and Affleck and wasn’t disappointed, but nothing grandiose. Just ok.

Watched it tonight too. It was entertaining enough for a twisty cop flick.

Yeah, not great but not bad either - pretty much exactly what you'd expect from all involved for a Netflix movie. Terrible final scene though, they are noticeably not on location...leaves a bad feeling imo. "Yep, that's a Netflix movie"

I actually enjoyed this a lot. No, it's not an award winner. However, I think it's better than what I expect from Netflix. It looked and felt like a real movie, not something meant for streaming. This is the kind of mid budget movie you used to see in theaters.
