In never-before-seen footage captured over a decade on and off set, this doc film chronicles John Wick's journey from independent film—facing a mountain of creative, financial, personal challenges—into a global phenomenon that redefined the action genre and launched three megahit sequels. Join Keanu Reeves, director Chad Stahelski, and the extended Wick cast and crew as they go behind the scenes of this billion-dollar franchise that almost never happened.Wick is Pain is a doc directed by filmmaker Jeffrey Doe, a longtime film editor now directing his first feature film. Produced by Josh Oreck, Gabriel Roth, and Matthew Sidle. The film will premiere with a BeyondFest screening in early May. Lionsgate will then debut Wick is Pain direct-to-VOD starting May 9th, 2025 for anyone to watch.

If this is a 1:45 to 2 hour documentary, then sure I'll pick up the digital. But, I won't get it for any more than $10-12.

I hope Eva Longoria has a brief appearance in the doc. She helped save the first movie, by funding it. https://variety.com/2024/film/news/e...ks-1236196504/

80 minutes seems reasonable. But, I'm not going to pay anymore than $10 for this then. I love good in depth behind the scenes material and the story of how the 1st movie bloomed from a small indie movie to a big action franchise seems like a compelling watch.

This looks solid and I am a sucker for a good movie documentary.
Now please, let this be the final bookend and don't make another John Wick. I enjoyed Part 4, but I think it has run its course. Spin-offs...fine. But let John Wick be done with John Wick.

Yeah, I hope they cover that part.

There'd be little to nothing to cover, as far as Longoria is concerned. The context behind the audio commentary joke I mentioned was that it was their response to what it was like working with Eva Longoria. The way Leitch and Stahelski tell it, they never met her. So it seems likely some third party mentioned the project to her and her company or reps donated a check she signed. Given how hands off she was, I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of several indie projects she "produced". It just goes to show how little merit the title has these days. Usually, only the producer with P.G.A. at the end of his/her/their name actually has a hand in the production.

Gotcha. She was more of a benefactor than actual producer.

Finished the documentary today. Solid overview of the movies. The 1st hour focused more on Part 1 and the development of the movie and the problems they had. Yes, they did talk about the financing issues and how they got saved by Eva Longoria's contribution. She isn't interviewed though.
The 2nd hour is basically a run through of parts 2 through 4. They talk about how Leitch bailed because he wanted to do his own thing and decided to direct Atomic Blonde instead of being involved with 2. The rest focused more on the stunts and action sequences and how they got constructed. Stahelski actually used to be an actor and they showed some footage of him in Bloodsport 2, which is how he met Daniel Bernhardt, who worked on the movies as a stunt performer/actor.
There were some pretty good interviews and they all seemed recently shot with Keanu, Leitch, Stahelski, and the producers.
I know 5 was recently put into development by Lionsgate. The guys never said that 4 was definitively the end. They said after working on the series for almost 10 years, they were looking forward to taking some much needed time off. I assume they won't revisit 5 for at least a few years after Keanu and Stahelski work on other things for a bit.
A solid movie documentary overall. It's worth owning if you want to supplement your John Wick content.

Thanks for the write-up, DJariya. But "my Eva Longoria"? We'll get into that later, in private.
I'd like to get this, but I can't help but wonder if it might eventually be included on the home video release of John Wick: Chapter 5.

You’re talking maybe 3 to 4 years from now possibly? And there is zero guarantee this ever gets a physical release let alone dropped as a “extra”. The documentary is really inexpensive. Just get it now.

Watched this last night and it was really good. I like how it went into Chad's early career. I didn't know he was in the Bloodsport sequels.

Several European 4K UHD BD and standard BD releases of Ballerina are going to include this documentary as a special feature. However, it is excluded from all US releases of that movie.

This is only $3.99 4K via the Fanflix sale. It’s $9.99 regular price on Fandango at home. All the other John Wick movies are $4.99 also 4K on this same link. Ballerina is $9.99.
