The Roses (2025, D: Roach) - S: Cumberbatch, Colman, Samberg, Janney, McKinnon

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.

The War of the Roses was a favorite when I was a kid, for some reason. I just rewatched it and it totally holds up.

That said, this has an incredible cast and looks like a lot of fun. I’m all for it!

Could be fun, or could be horrible. Not sure there'll be an in-between with this.

Love the house shown in the trailer. Not sure if it's a real house or just a set - but that kitchen is gorgeous.
Yes, I've turned into a chick.

It's kind of weird that this and Caught Stealing are coming out on the same day. They feel like they're targeting the exact same moviegoers.

I’m not sure that I’m really that interested in this. I’ve seen the trailers many times, especially in the theater, and I’ve found the characters grating. For the record, I’ve never seen The War of the Roses.

Give it a shot. I think it's one of the great "funny-movies-about-things-that-aren't-funny". Great direction by DeVito. And it does not wimp out in the end.

Yeah, the original is one of my favorite "mean-spirited, pitch black comedies", a sub-genre I am very fond of.
This doesn't look nearly as mean-spirited, at least in the trailer. Giving the Roses kids seems like a bad decision.

They have children in the original?

Saw an early Dolby show tonight. This is one of those it's all in the trailers flicks. A few laughs but not exactly laugh out loud. They are pretty harsh toward each other in their verbal sparring. Cumber and Coleman were definitely good together but if you're not 100% interested then just wait.

Yeah this is one that I’m not 100% clamoring to see. I’m probably going to sit this one out.

I'm tempted to see it mainly because they are putting it on the premium dolby screen.

Meh. The movie spend an hour and ten minutes just getting to the divorce, and now that there's thirty or minutes of less left, all the big scenes are reduced to basically being montages.

This claims to be based on the novel The War of the Roses, which I read over thirty years ago and don't remember well, but I'm pretty sure bares no resemblance to this.

I put on the Danny DeVito movie afterwards just to watch the first five minutes. In that small period there was funny moments, creative cinematography, great music, the feel of an epic story starting. I'll be rewatching it tomorrow evening for sure, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a real unique dark comedy.

The dialogues bewteen Cumberbatch and Colman are really well written. Everything else seems to be written for another movie. I do like Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, but they were in a completely different and unfunny movie with terrible dialogue. This ruined the movie.

I don’t mind black comedies, but the original movie just seemed nasty, and I never watched it again,

I loved the original as a kid (I was 9 years old at the time), but the trailer to this one made it look awful. Despite the two leads, I can't bring myself to watch it.

I thought it was great. And I loved the original.

Did you see a difference regarding the British and American dialogues? I still think those were ritten by different writers. The British dialogues were clever, funny and subtle. The American dialogues were vulgar, cringe and loud.

I figured that was intentional, but it did seem like Jake and the alien abduction survivor were there from a different movie.
