The Ugly Stepsister (Norway, 2025) W/D: Emilie Blichfeldt

Just stumbled across this via an A/V Club article. It’s a Norwegian body horror period piece in the Cinderella vein. Looks like it opens April 18. It’s from IFC and Shudder, so I don’t know what kind of theatrical coverage that means or if it will be on Shudder in no time. A lot of the reviews and comments on the trailer reference SUBSTANCE vibes, which seem to be earned.

This is the first feature by writer-director Emilie Blichfeldt, after a few short films, some of which similarly deal with body image issues.

I suspect the best known cast member is Ane Tahl Dorp as the wicked stepmother. She had some previous disaster thrillers turn up on these shores: PIONEER, THE WAVE, and THE QUAKE. As per IMDb, actress Lea Myren has been in Norwegian TV shows for about 15 years.

95% score on RT:

Saw this listed at AMC and assumed it was another of those "free rights" pieces. Looks like an actual movie, but not sure it is my taste. I was intrigued up until the eyeball stuff. Nope.

Given the buzz, I thought this might be a decent sized crowd tonight. It wasn't. It was an odd decision to open this the same weekend as Sinners.

That actually looks pretty insane. I’m not sure it’s my type of thing but it’s certainly interesting.

Sadly, I missed this in theaters last week as my work schedule got a bit insane.

I heard it's releasing on Shudder next month, so I'll be checking it out then.

I think I gotta give these body horror movies a rest. This one'll get you squirming (pun very much intended for those who've seen it) in your seat.

With a few pacing issues aside, I absolutely loved this film.

Lea Myren's performance is fantastic.

As for the Body Horror aspects of the film, I don't recommend eating anything while watching this

Enjoyed this one quite a bit. It gets pretty wild towards the end.
