Marathon (Bungie; PS5 / PC / Xbox Series; 3/5/26)

I thought there was a thread from when this game was announced, but I guess not. It seems to be only very loosely related to the original games, and this one is some kind of multiplayer extraction shooter.

Anyway, gameplay will be shown this week.

Bungie originally claimed they were releasing the game on all platforms (except maybe Switch, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits Switch 2), but we’ll see if that holds.

re: Marathon (Bungie; PS5 / PC / Xbox Series; 3/5/26)

We played this so much (and Unreal) when I was in school back in 1996-2001.

I was also in a team of international talent made up of amateur graphic designers, game designers, artists, and musicians that used the level editors and sprite editors to completely remake the game (and it was so popular it was packaged in the release of Marathon Infiniti).

That was fun!

Marathon is off to a running start!
By which I mean Bungie has been caught blatantly stealing artwork. They’ve acknowledged it (blaming a former employee, naturally), but it’s unclear exactly how it will be handled. Are they going to compensate this person? Or delay the game to remove all of the stolen material?

They’re blaming a “former artist” at the company, so someone who isn’t even there anymore. Classy.

And yet Marathon's art director, UI lead designer, and other art team members all follow Antireal on social media. Wild how so many folks at Bungle pay attention to this artist's work, but none of them recognize it when this supposed former artist stole it...and from a studio that's gotten in hot water for art theft repeatedly in the past couple of years.

re: Marathon (Bungie; PS5 / PC / Xbox Series; 3/5/26)

A delay may be imminent… apparently Sony/Bungie has canceled existing ad marketing plans. There’s a chance this has to do with the stolen art mentioned earlier, and they may have to either pay out the artist and/or rework a lot of it. That’s not trivial.

Such a delay could very well turn into a full cancellation…

re: Marathon (Bungie; PS5 / PC / Xbox Series; 3/5/26)

Officially delayed. We’ll know more in the Fall.

Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest, but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps.

Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We've taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we've made the decision to delay the September 23rd release.

You'll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we've made, alongside the game's new release date. Thank you again for your patience and— much more importantly— your passion. Your continued feedback will help us make Marathon the incredible gaming experience we all know it can be.
Over the next few months, we'll continue closed testing(including participants from the Alpha) to deploy gameplay updates and test new features as they come online.
Some of our immediate focus areas will be:
  • Upping the Survival Game
    • More challenging and engaging AI encounters
    • More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
    • Making combat more tense and strategic
  • Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
    • Increased visual fidelity
    • More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
    • A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
  • Adding more social experiences
    • A better player experience for solo/duos
    • Prox chat, so social stories can come to life

Updated the thread title to reflect the new release window. Also, it’s $39.99, like Helldivers 2.

Well, Halo it ain’t, but that world rendering I’m not sure about. Almost looks like a sim.

That's kinda cool looking. But lord knows I don't need another controller.

I could use one or two. The 3 I have are just not cutting it for me.
