The Friend (2025, D: McGehee and Siegel) S: Watts, Murray, Gugino, Dowd

I saw this yesterday. I noticed some of the Audience reviews on RT are quite low because they thought it was too slow. And I don't know what they were expecting, "Beethoven"!? This was a charming and heartwarming film. With great writing and terrific performances from everyone. Especially Naomi Watts. It's also quite sad in several parts. And there is one scene towards the end that was a gut punch. But if you're a dog lover, this is a must see. 8.5/10 rating from me.

Watts is great and makes the movie worth watching, but I thought it overstayed it's welcome a little.

Both my friend and I thought that scene with Watts and Murray at the end should have been shorter. A lot shorter. That was the only thing that dragged for both of us. And I was glad to see Bill again since he was pretty much a cameo in this. But that scene felt like an eternity, even though it was probably only 5 minutes. And I completely get and understand the importance of the scene. But it definitely slowed the movie down just as it was wrapping up.

Yes, a bit slow by today's standards but this was a moving story with a great performance by Watts. That dog also deserves an Oscar.

Maybe just have some Kleenex handy for a scene or two.

I don't own a dog and maybe it hits harder for dog owners but still worth a watch.

I wanted more Watts and Murray scenes and flashbacks.

Yes, that scene at the end on the beach. Fucking hell, that was brutal.

Spoiler:
But then it was a relief when the dog was still alive.

Yes, but....
Spoiler:

Seeing him lifeless on the beach was really emotional. Thinking he was gone. And died out there all alone.

And the other scene where Naomi petted and snuggled with him and cried.
